ode to magazines

A little over a week ago I did this shoot at a book market and I told you I didn’t read books nearly enough. Today’s location is a book store known for it’s wide range of magazines. I’m pretty confident to say I know a lot about magazines. I’ve worked as a graphic designer for several magazines and briefly designed and directed a couple of editions of a mini magazine myself. Besides that I have a huge collection of mags I keep for inspiration at home. Stores like this one are like a candy store to me; there’s so many magazines to discover and if I could I would probably spend my paycheck on magazines every month.

Now as you probably know the media landscape is changing and everyone seems to have an opinion on it these days. Magazines that ignore the online world completely go under and some say blogs are the new magazines. I’m only one girl so I don’t really think I can compete with a magazine, so far it’s only the huge blogs that have a whole team behind them that seem to operate like a magazine would. I love to get my news from online sources like Refinery29, NYMag and Manrepeller, but sometimes I’m tired of clicking and grab a mag. There’s nothing like feeling the paper, flicking through the pages and experiencing this thing that actually has a rhythm to it; an edition which is made for you to have a multifaceted experience with a logical beginning and end. Because magazines don’t say ‘You might like…’ or ‘Latest Top Stories’. There’s no chaos and it’s just you and a lovely piece of inspiring paper.

I was very sad to read that one of my fave UK mags Company Magazine’s print edition will disappear and will only live on online from now on. It was one of the most inspirational magazines I’ve read. Don’t get me wrong, I’m super happy to be part of this online rollercoaster, but I sure as hell hope that magazines will stay! They’re the perfect match to a sunny day at the beach or a rainy day with a cuppa on the couch. Of course I’d love to know your thoughts on this. What do you think the future holds for magazines? Do you love a good mag as much as I do and which one is your fave?
