TUESDAY TIPS: GETTING TRAFFIC TO YOUR BLOG

Word of mouth
In the famous words of Kanye himself: Tell everybody that you know… Ok, so I’m not telling you to always take advice from Yeezy, but this time he’s definitely right. You should tell everybody you know about your blog. Keep it appropriate, you don’t want to be a real life billboard, but whenever a person shows a sincere interest in you, do tell them about your blog. Word of mouth can sometimes spread like wildfire, especially if the person you tell really likes your blog.

Business cards
You might not see your blog as a business (yet), but business cards will always come in handy. Think of the number of times you’ve first told someone about your blog. You might go to an event and chat with fellow bloggers or a brand representative who’d like to visit your blog later. It’s happened to me a lot of times that I forgot about someone’s blog name because they didn’t have a business card. So wherever you go, pop a few cards in every bag or coat you have, so you can always hand them out!

Email signature
Add a signature to all of your emails including your blog link. Don’t worry, this will not look spammy. If someone you’re having an email convo with wants to know a little more about you, they’re very likely to end up on your blog.

Commenting
Commenting on other blogs can be a bit time consuming, so it’s not something I always do. It’s a great way to connect to other bloggers and people reading their comments might also check out your blog. This technique doesn’t work when you’re copy pasting generic comments like ‘Nice post! Please check out my blog and let me know when you follow me, I follow back’. I always feel a bit awkward when receiving comments like this. It’s better to actually read the post and write a sincere comment

Social media
For starters add your blog link to all of your social media profiles. Promote your posts on all of your channels and check your referral links in Google Analytics every once in a while. Focus on whatever channel gives you the most traffic.

Cross-promotion
A lot of brands will get in touch asking you to promote their product in exchange for promoting you on their social channels. I’ve tried this a couple of times and this isn’t something that has worked for me. It might work for you though, so it’s definitely something to try sometime. Cross-promotion with other bloggers did work for me. When I first started blogging I did a ’4 ways to wear’ series with 3 other bloggers, which gave me quite some traffic. It also helps to shoot outfits together with other bloggers and link to each others blogs.

Facebook groups
I might drive some of my Facebook friends nuts for spamming their timelines, but promoting my posts in Facebook groups really works for my traffic. The ‘downside’ is that it’s mostly other bloggers visiting your blog, although there’s also an upside to this: they might share your blog on their blogs / social media if they like it Another downside is how time consuming it is to post in dozens of groups. But when it gives you a lot of traffic, it’s worth it!
If you don’t know which group to join, here’s one. And here. Here‘s one too. And here.

So these were a couple of ways to promote your blog. Just try out a couple of things and see what works for you. Keep an eye on Google Analytics referral links, so you know what to focus on!
If there’s any specific questions that are left unanswered, let me know! Keep your eyes peeled for plenty more tips to come.
