Trend Driven: Would You Wear One of Fall 2014′s Ugly Jackets?

Trust Miuccia Prada to take something so traditionally ugly – the practical outdoorsy coat – and turn it into a must-have fashion item. Almost every single model that stepped out onto Miu Miu’s Autumn/Winter 2014 runway was dressed in a nylon windbreaker, plastic mac or quilted jacket. On paper it shouldn’t look good, but somehow Miuccia made the reality quite covetable.

It’s not a style that I’d feel confident enough to wear, but I’m enjoying watching the trend take off. Ashley Olsen has already been spotted in an ‘ugly’ Nike jacket, and I suspect there’s already a long line of famous Miu Miu fans queuing up to wear the brand’s normcore outerwear. The race is now on to see who gets there first: Anna Dello Russo, Rihanna or Elle Fanning. (My money’s on Anna.)

If you’re feeling brave and want to tap into the Miu Miu look I’ve tracked down three ‘ugly’ jackets which are sure to do the job. Pair them with pastel knits and quilted mini skirts, à la Miu Miu, and make sure your hair is styled neatly and your shoes are undeniably girly.

1. Nike hooded jacket // 2. Topshop plastic bomber // 3. ASOS rain mac (also available in yellow) // J.Crew sweater // Topshop skirt // Miu Miu pumps

If you’re still not sure whether this trend is for you I’ve asked three of the UK’s most daring bloggers to share their thoughts on fall’s ‘ugly’ outerwear. They might just inspire you to give the look a whirl…

Stevie from Discotheque Confusion: “I am not one to sniff at clothes that look like Quality Street wrappers. In fact, plastic-y garments are sort of my jam, especially when it means filling your transparent pockets with odds and ends and turning them into sartorial curiosity museums. To really embrace the look I’d wear a sunshine yellow mac with a pink ponyhair skirt and mint triangle coloured heels. My one thread of restraint would come in the form of a simple neoprene sweater.”

Wendy from Thank Fifi: “The plastic raincoats are not for me but the quilting is something I can get on board with. The Miu Miu jackets have a preppy edge, so I’d style them with with tailored skinnies and a ladylike heel for a feminine contrast (and my dog, Mr K, or course).”

Kristabel from I Want You To Know: “Practical outerwear has become much more fashion forward over the years, and I love the quilting and colour blocking in the Miu Miu collection. You could do some great layering and print mixing with the jackets. However, I’d probably keep my footwear quite chunky and ugly as well, even though the collection was shown with pretty shoes.”

So, are you convinced? Let me know if you’ll be following Miuccia Prada’s lead this season, or whether you plan to sit this trend out like me.
