Beauty Boost: The New-ish Things in My Makeup Bag Right Now

Say what? It’s been almost three months since the last “what’s in my makeup bag” post! I’m sure you’ve all been on the edge of your seats, frantically wondering which products are littering my beauty bag, and now the wait is finally over. Here’s a quick update on some of the buys I’m currently loving – four are brand new, two are just new to me…

Jo Malone London Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne – My name is Ella, and I’m a perfume hoarder. I promised myself I’d stop collecting fragrances because my collection is getting out of control, but Jo Malone’s latest scent, Wood Sage & Sea Salt, managed to slip in under the radar. The cologne was inspired by the British coastline, and it’s completely free of floral notes (which is a first for the brand). It’s light, fresh, woody and unexpectedly sexy. You must give it a try!

Burberry Fresh Glow Compact Foundation – I was 17 when I bought my first foundation. It was an Estée Lauder powder, purchased at Bergdorf Goodman, and at the time it seemed like a very sophisticated jump from tinted moisturiser. Since then, however, I’ve only used liquid foundations, so I was excited to try Burberry’s Fresh Glow powder. The compact foundation offers medium coverage and - depending on the finish you prefer - it can be applied with a damp or dry sponge. I like it a lot, but instead of using it as my daily base I’ve been carrying it around in my handbag to top up my liquid foundation throughout the day. It’s great at fixing mid-afternoon oily T-zone emergencies.

Clinique Brush-On Cream Liner in “Black Honey” – This gel eyeliner isn’t a new release, but I only discovered it recently, and it’s set to play a big part in my AW14 beauty look. It makes a nice change from jet black, looks fantastic when it’s a bit smudged (so is a great choice for anyone who struggles with precise application), and it can also be used as a cream eyeshadow if you fancy a more dramatic look. I give it a big thumbs up!

Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in “Sexy Sienna” – Over the summer I wrote about Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution lipsticks, which she introduced to press in June so that the long-lead publications could get their coverage ready for the official September launch. “Sexy Sienna” is my go-to shade (it’s named after Miss Miller, of course), but I also rate “Red Carpet Red” and am keen to try “Amazing Grace”. At £23 they’re not cheap, but they truly are spectacular matte lipsticks – long lasting, easy to apply and non-drying.

Estée Lauder Sculpting Foundation Brush – It feels like 80% of my waking hours are spent in front of a laptop screen, and I literally dream about ergonomic chairs. They’re so bloody expensive though, so instead I’ve had to opt for an ergonomic foundation brush. Sure, it does absolutely nothing for my back, but it gives my makeup a quick, professional-looking, seamless finish. If you like a new beauty gadget I’m sure you’ll also be impressed.

Max Factor Glossfinity Nail Polish – Recently there’s been a noticeable backlash against gel manicures which set under ultraviolet or L.E.D. lights (there are worries the exposure to UV rays could increase the risk of skin cancer). And as a result a lot beauty brands are launching long-lasting gel polishes that air dry instead. Max Factor’s new Glossfinity line is packed full of great colours, and I’m loving the autumnal shades “Aqua Marine” and “Burgundy Crush”. They’re supposed to stay chip-free for up to 7 days, but on my chip-able fingertips it’s more like 3-4 days.

What beauty products are you currently loving? And have you tried any of these Aw14 launches yet? As always, leave a comment and let me know…
