An Icing Masterclass at Biscuiteers in Notting Hill

It takes a lot to get me to leave the house on a Tuesday evening because The Mindy Project is on TV. But when my friends invited me to attend a biscuit decorating masterclass at Biscuiteers in Notting Hill I immediately said yes (I believe Mindy Kaling would approve of this decision). I often send Biscuiteers’ hand iced biscuits with thank you notes or as birthday gifts, so the idea of decorating my own was both exciting and daunting. They’re supposed to look like edible works of art, but I had a feeling mine would resemble something a 5-year-old made. And I my premonition was correct…

The class was lead by one of Biscuiteers’ lovely “expert icers”. She started by demonstrating how to hold the icing bag properly, then got us to practise drawing lines and zig zags on baking paper before we attempted the outline on our pre-baked butterfly biscuits. Laura and I both struggled from the get go, creating wobbly shapes that didn’t look anything like butterflies; but Maz demonstrated Great British Bake Off levels of perfection from the very beginning. Her biscuits were sophisticated, tasteful and artistic; ours were “homely” and “full of character”.

We were also given three professionally iced biscuits to decorate further with metallic paint, which was a lot easier, as the hard work had already been done. Laura gave all of her butterflies smiling faces. Have you ever seen a more cheerful biscuit?

At the end of the class we were each given a Biscuiteers tin to take our biscuits home in, as well as the illustrated aprons we wore. My butterflies might not have looked very professional, but they certainly tasted delicious! To find out more about Biscuiteers icing classes click here.
