Artist Interview : Juliette Dudley

Juliette Dudley is an illustrator & graphic designer based in Canberra. She is known for her fantastic watercolour illustrations. I met Juliette when she was a co-editor at Us Folk magazine. At the moment, Juliette is pursuing her career in graphic design, and contributing to Canberra’s art & design scene by creating Good Design Club, a website that promotes local artists and designers. Find out more about her in our interview below.

Hi Juliette, Tell us more about you and what you’re doing. I’m a graphic designer and illustrator based in Canberra, Australia. I completed an Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design at Canberra Institute of Technology in 2008 and then a Bachelor of Graphic Design from University of Canberra in 2013. I’ve been working as a professional graphic designer for five years now, in a range of different workplaces including a printer, real estate agency and The Canberra Times. I currently work as an in-house designer for Engineers Australia, and work on freelance projects after work and on weekends. I’ve also been interested in art ever since I can remember, so drawing and painting are a big part of my personal work and illustration. How do you find a balance between working full time in the office and doing your own projects? I find it fairly easy to motivate myself to work on freelance projects after work because I enjoy it so much. The hard part is making time for other things in life – going out, eating well, exercising. I’ve recently started treating my freelance projects more like I would treat my projects at the office, so now I’m a bit more organised with my process. I also use an online booking software which has project management features and time tracking, so this helps me to manage my freelance work just like I would in my day job.
Where do you go or what do you do to get inspiration flowing? Design blogs and magazines are a great source of inspiration. Some of my favourites are Design Is Yay (of course), The Design Files, Desktop, The Design Kids, Habitus, Juxtapoz and Inky Goodness. When I can make the time for it I also love to get outside – I just love fresh air, sunshine and nature, things which you don’t get to see much of when you sit at a desk most of the day. Another thing I don’t do enough of is go to art exhibitions. I find they can be a really relaxing experience, and a great way to go back to thinking about core design principles. I also run a design blog in what remains of my spare time, called Good Design Club. I really enjoy interviewing fellow designers because it helps to remind me that we all go through the same kind of struggles from time to time – it’s inspirational to read about other people’s successes. I also love to travel when I can – going to Japan for two weeks in October. I know it’s kind of predictable but I’m really into Japanese and Korean culture at the moment.
What has been the best experience of your career so far, and why? I can’t really think of one thing, but working at The Canberra Times was pretty cool. The people I worked with were really nice and I learnt a hell of a lot.
In my spare time, I…..
… draw, watch anime and sci-fi shows, eat sushi and Korean BBQ.
