How to choose glasses that suit your personality and lifestyle?

For some people, glasses simply provide a functional way to relieve eye strain or correct vision. However, many also choose eyewear which reflects an aspect of their personality, or make a statement with their choice of frames or lenses. In this article, we take a look at some of the ways in which your spectacles can enhance aspects of your personality, fit in with your lifestyle and add wow factor to your look.

Classic Looks

Some of the most iconic fashion statements were brought to mass attention in the movies. Who can forget the huge rise in the sales of ‘aviator’ sunglasses after Tom Cruise and co sported them during the classic 80s flick Top Gun. The aviator provides a “cool” look, completely hiding the eyes and suggesting a hint of danger. Contrast that with another iconic pair of eyewear as worn by the character Morpheus in “The Matrix” trilogy – minimalist dark lenses held tightly on the bridge of the nose. The latter look is very individual, and would perhaps not work for a majority of folk.

The Eyes Have It

Your prescription glasses can say a lot about you. Serious business types may need to look studious and so more classic, recognisable looks can work best – traditional colours, basic shapes (rectangles or ovals), and simple silver metals. In a more creative industry such as fashion or photography, more “out there” spectacles are the norm – choose styles with geometric designs, multi-coloured frames or brightly coloured lenses. John Lennon’s classic round glasses often featured sharply coloured lenses, giving him a very chic appearance. Elton John of course was renowned for flamboyant eye adornments and headwear throughout his stage career, though such looks are perhaps a little too much for the high street!

Frame Your Face

The right choice of frame and lens can also help soften features and give you a more youthful look. Many opticians suggest oval frames work well for women, especially when coupled with brighter or shinier frames, while men can add a boost to their look by trying brown or burgundy colours and cool rectangular frames. If you’re lucky enough to be young and sporty, you can pick from a great range of lenses and frames to enhance that look too – bright red frames, wraparounds, stripes and chic blends of plastic and metals can really give a dynamic look (and may also boost your confidence and hence improve your chances of sporting or workout success too!)

Practicality

Of course your choice of spectacles may be far more than just an attempt to enhance your appeal. There may be a practical need to wear lenses in different conditions, and so light-adjusting lenses are very much an option here – these darken in brighter light and so work equally well both indoors and outside, removing the need to carry two pairs around with you.

There Is No Single Look

Of all the styles and fashion crazes mentioned here, none has ever completely dominated the fashion world or marketplace. What looks good on one face may not work for the next person – the key thing is to experiment with different styles and looks, and find something that reflects your personal taste and maybe adds a little fun or serious factor, depending on what you require. One size very much does not fit all – if it did, the world would be a dramatically less interesting place!
