DIY HOME: DESK FLOWERS

To me, working from home always symbolized the ultimate in lifestyle, equating to endless autonomy and (in my mind) hopefully mirroring Carrie Bradshaw’s brunch-shopping-drinks nine to five. But in reality working from home is nowhere near the glamorous, stress free existence it appears to be – something I quickly learnt when I was writing my book last year. For one thing you can go days without leaving the house which makes for some serious cabin fever, and for another you’re often bereft of the social interactions that stimulate creativity – it’s a case of having to go out and find people to stimulate you in a way you would never have to if you were in a workplace. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all bad (wild horses couldn’t drag me back to a few of my previous places of work) but it is very different. And one thing I’ve learnt is that when it comes to a productive home office environment, the ‘look good, feel good’ motto certainly applies to your space. Although cliche, desk flowers are a great stimulant – perhaps when you’re looking at something inspiring it’s more likely your ideas will be palatable – beautiful even? One can only hope.
