Decorating with Bold Furniture (with Chairish)

I have some bold pieces in my home. Furniture rich with color that makes a statement (peacock blue velvet chairs anyone?). One of the most common questions I get is that it looks so great in my house, but how does someone else pull it off? It’s true, decorating with bold furniture can be tricky, but it also adds life to your home, fun to a space, and personality to any room.

The folks at Chairish, an amazing online vintage furniture and home decor resource, asked me to put together a design style board around some bold chairs to explain my thought process and how I put a room together around a statement piece.

Chairish sent me a file of their newest collection of accent chairs and while they were all beautiful, I was drawn to these Green High Back Broyhill Chairs. You can browse all of their accent chairs HERE.

They are traditional but in the right space they could also be fresh and fun. Plus, they look comfortable– always a bonus.

Designing a space always starts with some kind of inspiration, and then I build the room around that. For this room, I’m starting with these chairs as a launching point. The next place I went was fabric. When choosing fabric, the easiest next step is to find a fabric that has the same color as the chairs, or at least flows nicely with it. I don’t want fabric that has the green as the dominant color– that would be too much green. Instead, I’m looking for something that feels like the floral skirt to my solid blazer. Make sense?

The chairs are the stars of the show, so all of the other large pieces in the room are pretty neutral. If you love color, you can’t go splashing it on everything or it will look more Punky Brewster than the chic room you want. The fabrics bring in more color, but they aren’t overwhelming on the neutral sofa. and rug.

A refined coffee table, and earthy wood accent table to ground the room, gorgeous mirror and a sophisticated Deco lamp pull the space together.

Using bold furniture can add a lot of personality to your home. In fact, I just got a new blue settee back from the upholsterer and I’m trying to figure out where it will live.

Tomorrow is the beginning of the family room construction and reveal posts! Happy Tuesday!
