Treasure Hunting Tuesday (new series!)

A neighbor, a family member, a stranger in the grocery store, I get questions about my thrifting and treasure hunting expeditions everywhere I go. What do I look for? How do I know I’ve found something great?

Today I’m kicking off a new series: Treasure Hunting Tuesday. Every Tuesday, I’ll share some of my latest finds, how I found them, and why I think they are scores. Let’s start with these beauties….

I always hit the book section. Always. Vintage Reader’s Digest books are at the top of my list, followed by hardbacks of pretty colors. It doesn’t matter what the topic is, it’s how great it will look on a shelf or nightstand that I’m looking for.

Half of the Reader’s Digest books are just plain covers, but it’s the patterned covers I’m after. Aren’t they just so beautiful? In fact, I have a gorgeous collection of them on the shelves in my family room, and another smaller pastel set on my nightstand. Thrift stores are the best place to find them because they are so cheap. I found a decent set at an antique shop recently for $150. This entire stack cost $3.25.

Next up– brass rocking horses. I have a brass animal figurine obsession. I can’t help it! I just think they are so beautiful. I found this family of brass rocking horses at three different thrift stores, within a week. Weird and awesome. Like I was reuniting a family. If you can get a little nesting action with your brass animals, all the better in my opinion. The two bigger horses were $10 each, and the baby was $5. For these, I headed to the “collectable” section or glass cases at the thrift store. I always get a kick out of some of the collectables– a lot of it is total crap. But, that is where I have found some real treasures for sure including more brass animals, Wedgewood China, coral, antlers, and the list goes on. The horse family needs a good cleaning, but how adorable will they be in a nursery or playroom? A whole lot of cuteness.

This last find is a little weird, but weird can be awesome and I think these ceramic heads definitely swing the way of the awesome department. I’ll use these guys as bookends, or maybe break them up and use them in different spots. I found them in the most random place– out in the yard area of a thrift store (where they put things they either don’t know what to do with or they haven’t moved them into the store yet). $6 for the set. I know they aren’t for everyone, but I love them.

And there you have it! My first Tuesday Treasure Hunting post. I’d also love to hear about your treasure hunting expeditions and finds! If you grab something great, shoot me an email and I’ll include in on a Tuesday post. And then I’ll try to convince you to send it to me:)

Coming up tomorrow, dun, dun, dun, big exciting crazy town announcement!
