Fashion Spice

Victoria Beckham has made a name for herself aside from her husband, David. Although the former Spice Girl’s solo career was pretty non-descript, the mother of four has carved out a successful career as a fashion designer, culminating in being named the British Fashion Designer of the year in 2011, seeing off competition from names like Stella McCartney and Tom Ford.

However, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the designers for Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana, are not fans. The duo recently stated: “she’s a designer but…for us, she doesn’t make (clothes) the same way like a fashion designer”. Instead, they believe she is more high street than catwalk, comparing her clothes to those found at H&M and Zara.

Is it a case of sour grapes? In the eyes of many it most definitely is. Victoria, who is 7/4 with Paddy Power to perform with the Spice Girls in their upcoming rumoured Las Vegas residency, is a high-end fashion designer and one who is doing very well.

Her debut collection featured in the 2008 New York Fashion Week and was met with universal acclaim. One critic stated “it was a very impressive, accomplished collection, with not a single dud. … it was the fabrics (silk, wool and organza) and the attention to detail that impressed.” You do not receive praise like that if your outfits are reminiscent of something found in H&M.

Moreover, she won the British Fashion Designer of the year award. To beat Stella McCartney is a formidable achievement; the daughter of the famous Beatle is revered in fashion circles and is likely to take Vivienne Westwood’s mantra as the Queen of British fashion in the upcoming years. Beckham’s work is admired and praised and for Dolce & Gabanna to say this is off the cuff and underhand and does reek of sour grapes.

Beckham has done well enough to open a flagship store in London. Ask any consumer who visits if it is reminiscent of Zara and you will have your answer.

The fashion world is full of comical spats and this latest escapade is just the tip of the iceberg.
