How to Get Your Husband to Eat a Healthy Breakfast: Make-Ahead Mason Jar Oatmeal

I’ve been trying to eat as healthy as possible in this new year, trying to avoid fast food and going to the gym and on walks as often as possible. I’m making mason jar salads for lunch, having a green smoothie for breakfast each morning, and a healthy dinner every evening. One reason was for my own personal health, but another was to try to get The Husband on the healthy eating train. I’ve gone vegetarian, gluten-free, and tried lots of different eating plans in the name of health, and each time The Husband turns up his nose and takes another big bite of his hamburger.

Just a few weeks ago though, as a bit of a joke, we both had our blood pressure read at one of those machines at the drugstore… and his came back scarily high. At that moment he realized he should probably start listening and working on his health a bit more. I’m happy to report he now takes supplements every day, and eats a healthy lunch and dinner prepared by yours truly.

I haven’t been able to get him on the green smoothie and green juice train yet, though, so breakfast was a bit difficult for me to figure out.

The Husband commutes an hour and a half into the city each way every day, and gets up around 4:30am (when I’m still passed out upstairs in the bed). We knew his breakfast had to be something he could easily grab and go, or else he’d fall back into his habit of stopping at a gas station for coffee and God-knows-what to eat.

One thing The Husband DOES love is cereal. We figured if we could get oatmeal into an easy to fix container he’d eat it, and so our Make-Ahead Mason Jar Oatmeal system was born.

We use wide-mouth half-pint mason jars to prepare a week’s worth of breakfast each Sunday. Instead of using pre-packaged mixed oatmeal with who-knows-what inside, we mix it together on our own, with oats, cinnamon, raisins, a little sugar, and some powdered creamer.

The Husband just tosses the jar into his bag, and when he gets to work adds water and pops it in the microwave. It’s perfect and fairly healthy, especially compared to a giant breakfast sandwich from McDonald’s or even Starbucks. Plus, oatmeal is great for lowering cholesterol too!

We’ve been using this system for several weeks now, and it’s still going strong. The Husband even prepares his jars on his own–it’s that easy. While I’m prepping lunches and dinners for the week, he gets his jars together and makes oatmeal. I’m just so proud.

Make-Ahead Mason Jar Oatmeal

Ingredients (this is per jar):

  • 1/2 cup quick oats
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tbsp. raisins
  • 1 tbsp. powdered creamer

Add all the ingredients to the jar. Before cooking, shake the jar thoroughly. Remove lid before microwaving. Add 1/2 cup water and microwave for 2 minutes. Place lid back on jar, let sit for 5 minutes. Enjoy!
