Würzburg, Germany

As our time in Germany started to come to a close, D and I decided we should make a list of cities we had to see before we moved. All of the cities that ended up on our list were perfect day trip material...our favorite kind of travel as of late. After spending the last three years planning trips, booking hotels, and trying to cram sight after sight into finite itineraries, an hour drive to day-trip in Würzburg sounded like a dream! Würzburg is a Franconian city located at the entrance to Germany's Bavarian region. It's known for its gorgeous palace (Würzburg Residenz), its proximity to the Main River, and for Würzburger Stein, Germany's oldest and largest vineyard.
During our visit in early spring, D and I were blessed with some incredible weather. Usually spring in Germany means rain and clouds, but this particular day was filled with sunshine and warm breezes. We spent the morning touring the Wurzburg Residenz interior and grounds (a must-see in Germany...the staterooms were unique and opulent) and the afternoon wandering the town, shopping for wine, and enjoying an al fresco lunch above the Würzburg old river mill (Alte Mainmühle Restaurant--delish!!). The city was bustling with outdoor markets and locals enjoying the perfectly un-Germany-like weather. While not my favorite of the towns we've visited in Germany, it's still lovely for a leisurely day of wandering and wine-drinking.
