My New Mummy Beauty Must Haves

Many new mums choose not to faff around with makeup or any type of beauty regime in the first weeks of taking their baby home but for me, it has been an essential part of the recovery process. I wanted to retain some sense of normality at a time when everything was new and confusing and overwhelming. Makeup makes me feel better when I slap it on in the morning – it’s as simple as that. I feel like recovering physically can depend a lot on your mental state. The mind is a powerful thing so anything that will boost positive thoughts, self esteem and my general mood is ok by me! I’m not talking about rocking a full on red lip or false lashes but a dash of foundation, concealer and mascara can do wonders. I decided to do a quick run down of the products which got me through the first week when I had very little time, very little energy and very little patience.

Skin

Showering feels like a luxury when you have a newborn – those stolen moments of bliss standing under a piping hot shower head as as close to heaven as it gets when you feel tired and lethargic. When time is short the L’occitane Almond Shower Oil is as good as it gets when it comes to hydrating and smoothing the skin in one go (and it smells damn good too!). I rarely found the time to moisturise my whole body in that first week but this shower oil kept my skin from turning dry or flaky – which can happen when you’re sleep deprived and generally run-down. The Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm has been a blogger favourite for some time now and it definitely kept my skin nourished and smooth in those difficult first few days. I love the face cloth that comes with it which helps to exfoliate the skin without being too harsh or stripping. It felt like a little bit of luxury amongst the endless feeds, nappy changing and sleepless nights. I have mentioned the Neals Yard Wild Rose Beauty Elixir before and that’s basically because it rocks. It contains loads of good stuff including essential oils and hyaluronic acid to smooth and soften your skin. A wonderful product to apply before your moisturiser to wake up with radiant and plump skin! My lips started to get incredibly dry in the first week once again just due to being exhausted but the Rodial Glam Balm Lip brought them right back from the brink. It got to the stage where my bottom lip split in the middle which can be really sore but as soon as I dug this out and started applying it regularly, my lips healed in no time.

Hair

As you can imagine there ain’t much time to mess around with elaborate haircare routines when you have a little one to look after. I think you have to choose which means more to you…a made up face or styled hair. Personally I can go low maintenance on my hair if my skin looks good so you kind of have to pick your battles! I have found that Batiste has become a close friend of mine for those days when my hair just needs to be freshened up and volumised. I don’t have time to wash my hair every single morning at the moment (and truth be told I can’t be bothered).

Makeup

The main thing you’re trying to achieve with your makeup at this stage is generally just to make yourself look semi-human. The dull skin and eye bags are the main culprits and one wonder product I use every day is the Nars Copacabana Illuminator. A liquid pale pink illuminating/highlighting that does wondrous things when mixed with any foundation. Seriously you’ll have beautifully glowing skin – I’m often asked what my secret is and that’s pretty much it! If you want a more subtle look then you can just highlight the high points of your face like your cheekbones, brow bones etc. To combat my dark circles I use a heavy duty concealer first like the Bobbi Brown Corrector then apply the Rimmel Match Perfection Concealer over the top which has illuminating properties. It’s great for just brightening the whole eye area and lifting any other part of your face that needs a zap of radiance. I don’t have time to mess about with lots of eyeshadows to create that layered look so I have been relying on eyeshadows in neutral shades with a nice blend able, buttery texture, making them easy t blend out and look effortless. The L’Oreal Color Riche L’Ombre Eyeshadows are fantastic and this Nude shade is perfect for that daytime look. Just apply with your finger or a brush and blend out for quick, easy eyes. Another time saver has been the Eyeko Skinny Liquid Liner which I actually got free with a magazine while I was in hospital. It’s super easy to use, like a black felt tip and it’s very precise so getting that feline flick is made that little bit more achievable. You don’t want to wear any strong lip colours when you have a newborn as you’ll find yourself constantly kissing their heads, face and they’re in contact with you all the time during burping etc. So I have just been going with something really quick, easy and brightening – the Revlon Just Bitten Balm Stain in Cherish for a dash of pink. It’s moisturising, easy to apply and gives your lips just the right amount of colour.

Now it’s your turn! Let me know which products you used the most in those first few days of bringing your little munchkin home!
