Review Of The Hudl 2 Tablet

This is a slight departure from my usual type of post but I was recently sent this product to review and I felt like it would be of real interest to some (if not all!) of my readers. I have not been paid to write this post or sponsored in any other way, other than receiving it for free to review. I like to make these things absolutely clear in the beginning so you guys know the score.

So this post is all about the brand new tablet from Tesco called the Hudl 2 (£129) which is causing waves because it outperforms everything else in its price range. The new tablet is bigger, faster with a higher-resolution screen and is apparently even more of a bargain than its predecessor, the Hudl 1.

Specifications:

Processor: Quad-core 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z3735D, Screen size: 8.3in, Screen resolution: 1,920×1,200, Rear camera: 5 megapixel, Storage: 16GB, Wireless data: None, Size: 222x8x127mm, Weight: 404g, Operating system: Android 4.4.2

The 8.3 inch screen is probably the best compromise between generic tablet size and having a screen big enough to do most of the things you would on your laptop. For the price point, the HD screen is amazingly clear, sharp and makes you feel like you’re using something MUCH more expensive!

The Hudl 2 is lovely to hold, with soft-touch plastic covering the rear and sides. There’s a microSD card slot on the side, which you’ll need as the tablet only has approximately 9GB of its 16GB storage left out of the box. It comes with a Micro HDMI port to plug it into your TV. The speakers are good quality in respect of their performance whilst playing videos, watching tv etc however they aren’t the best for playing music and do sound a little ‘tinny’, compared to an iPad. However, I feel like this is just a trade up for the price and it couldn’t possibly be perfect on every aspect given that it’s a quarter of the price of an iPad.

The Hudl 2 uses Android 4.4.2 so if you already have an Android mobile then you’ll be more than comfortable using the interface. The custom interface gives you easy access to Tesco’s own widgets showing information such as Clubcard points, your nearest Tesco and new recipes. You can delete these widgets if you so wish and change to a different launcher such as Google Now.

There’s a custom app which acts as an introduction to the world of Android, which the less tech-savvy of us may appreciate. The Hudl 2 makes it very easy to navigate around all of the settings, apps and widgets so there’s really no confusion. The tablet feels robust enough to give to your kids and comes with a Child Safety app which lets you add profiles for up to seven members of your family, and set the web pages they can view, the apps they can use and at what times of day they can use their tablet, and for how long. The software asks for each child’s age and sets defaults accordingly, and altering each child’s profile is simple. These customisations make it perfect for families with children because it gives you full control and makes everything very easy and streamlined.

Overall, I really do think this matches up well to an iPad and for the price, it gives you so much! This would make a fantastic Christmas present and you’re getting brilliant value for money on the same token. There’s a reason there are so many great reviews of this tablet!

You can buy the Hudl 2 here online for £129.
