Healthy Pumpkin Spice Latte {two ways}

Pumpkin, pumpkin, pumpkin.

It is officially pumpkin fall! Everywhere you turn the leaves and scents are changing, we are pulling out our puffy vests and scarfs, and coffee shops are updating their menus to include all of the seasonal favorites.

Fall is my favorite season; I love the warmth of cinnamon, college football games and layers that make up my daily look. Morning runs are sweeter with the crisp air. Orchards are a-buzz with kids picking out their pumpkins and apples. It is a wonderful time of year!

Fall also brings about a switch from iced to warm coffee. I love the way a warm cup of coffee feels in your hands on a brisk morning. And like you, I too have had my moment in line at the coffee shop waiting for the coveted Pumpkin Spice Latte. But not this year. Save your dollar bills, health and waist line because I have an awesome alternative for you.

And guess what? This one includes actual pumpkin.

So for all of you pumpkin lovers, I have the best drink for you. And for those of you that are oooh-kkkkay on the pumpkin, I have a great option for you as well. Lets get into it!

Ingredients
  • 2 tbs REAL pumpkin
  • ½-1 tbs real maple syrup
  • 1 tbs brown sugar
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1½ cups milk (your choice)
  • 1 cup of coffee or shot of espresso

Instructions
  1. Heat the pumpkin in a pan and add in spices and brown sugar (low heat).
  2. Mix well until combined.
  3. Add in maple syrup and combine until warmed through.
  4. Allow the mix to become golden, 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add milk and whisk to combine.
  6. Place in a blender and whip it up. There will be some bits from the pumpkin, which is delicious, but you can place in a strainer to make extra silky smooth.
  7. Store extra in an airtight container for one week.

{Subtle} Pumpkin Spice Latte

For those of you who are not big on the ‘punch-you-in-the-face’ taste of the PSL, here is a great way to add a touch of the season to your coffee.

Simply take your cup of coffee (or shot of espresso for a legit latte experience) and add in 3/4 cup warm milk (any kind will do, I use unsweetened almond milk), 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice and 1 tsp of maple syrup. Delish!

Take the above recipe and make it a mocha by adding in 1/2 tsp of unsweetened cocoa powder. Oh yes!

How to Order at the ‘Bucks

If you are ordering at Starbucks and don’t feel like downing over 500 cals in a venit and enough sugar as eating 180 gummy bears…here is a way to enjoy the drink sans sugar buzz. Order the short (no, not tall, the short which is 8 oz) with skim or 2% milk, no whip. Hey, sometimes we want a little treat, but lets all remember that it is just that – a treat. So have your sips and enjoy.

Do you love the PSL?

What is your favorite fall drink?

XO-
