Mr Start Spring/Summer 2015 – Pared-Down Quasi Casuals

Mr Start continue to strike a balance between formal attire and casual wear with a Spring/Summer 2015 collection that embodies the dual personality of the infamous mullet hairstyle. Thankfully, the Start take on “business in the front, party in the back” is infinitely more attractive than the aforementioned coiffure.

The brand’s creator, Philip Start, has made a name for himself through smart contemporary tailoring and calculated quasi-casual menswear offerings. The newest collection doesn’t disappoint with its warm weather-appropriate robin’s egg, ecru and off-white palette scattered with the occasional royal blue, gray and dark denim colorways. The inspiration this time around was a desire to create an ideal wardrobe that considered the evolution of a man’s clothing needs. From this point of view, simplicity, adaptability and most of all, function, were primary design touchstones.

Reversible jackets and button-front shirts in their most pared-down form go a long way in providing the elusive versatility that the Mr Start man seeks. For the spring and summer season, we see them styled as separates and paired with multifaceted suiting options. And, Mr Start has deconstructed suiting, too. Traditional blazers sport widened lapels for a slightly more casual look. Some have even surrendered the average button-through-slit closure for a more minimalist toggle style.

Mr Start also ventures into tailored “short suit” territory, providing slim-fitting knee-length shorts, many of which boast pressed creases that have an immediate de-casualizing effect. There are, of course, the obligatory tailored pants which vacillate between ankle-length and proper trouser length.

The crowning jewel of this collection is the “Shomber” jacket. It’s crafted from durable double-bonded cotton and is described by the company as “the athlete’s shirt and the business man’s bomber jacket.” Featuring a ‘60s collar, slight blouson sleeves and a ribbed hem and cuffs, the Shomber is a transitional piece that can be worn casually or smartened up with ease. If the the evolution of menswear means clothing that goes from business hours to after hours with no problem, we’re into it.
