Summer Camp @ Brooklyn Bowl (April 12, 2014)

After all these years, I finally got to see Summer Camp perform live. The married duo of Elizabeth Sankey & Jeremy Warmsley came all the way from England to play last night at Brooklyn Bowl. They were every bit as delightful as I could have hoped.

Most of the night was dedicated the songs off their most recent album, last year’s self-titled effort. Joined by drummer Robby Sinclair of Brooklyn band Lazer Cake, they acted as 3-piece and brought all the songs that they played to life quite easily. Throughout their set they had various clips from movies projected behind them, many of which included dance scenes from films such as (500) Days Of Summer, Billy Elliot, Footloose, and Save The Last Dance. This was a delightful little addition, making their set that much more entertaining as the clips were almost perfectly synched up with their music.

Personal highlights of the night for me were Welcome To Condale tracks they played: “Down” & “Better Off Without You.” Those were two of my favorite tracks from their debut album, and two of the first songs that got me into Summer Camp. It was cool to finally get to hear them live, giving me a flood of memories of the summer of 2011.

It was a fun set overall, with the inclusion of a cover of Biz Markie’s “Just A Friend” as evidence. They had everyone in the vibe smiling in full enjoyment of their set. Summer Camp are a true delight.
