Altruism Among Atheist Bloggers

Can a blogger be altruistic, or is everything we do ultimately self-serving? When I write a post with the explicit goal of helping others learn from my mistakes, am I doing something valuable or am I merely trying to attract visitors to my blog?

I'd like to think that I can selflessly help other atheist bloggers and that many of the posts I write in the blogging category are designed to do just that. The idea is simple: by helping other atheist bloggers, I am helping to promote atheism. This benefits everyone.

In addition to writing posts in which I offer blogging tips and address issues of importance to those writing atheist blogs, I try to help other atheist bloggers by promoting their content on Twitter, Facebook, and Google . I know that these services are typically used by bloggers to promote their own content, and I certainly use them to promote my work too. But if you follow me on Twitter, Facebook, Google , or Tumblr, you will see that I regularly share others' content in addition to my own.

I do not share others' content or promote their blogs because I expect something in return. Many of the bloggers whose content I share rarely reciprocate. I promote their work because I am interested in promoting atheism and see this as one way to do it.

When I find something thought-provoking that someone else has written, I share it in the hope that others will find it interesting or useful. If doing so means that I am missing opportunities to promote my own work, I suppose that is something with which I am willing to live.
