When I was asked if I would like to review this book I jumped at the chance. Coincidentally I had been thinking how lovely it would be a make a doll for baby Kestrel - I love the idea of a handmade doll that you could make different outfits for. Could you imagine making a doll's dress from the same material as a child's outfit? So cute. I'm not particularly enamoured with some of the dolls I've seen in shops plus I love the idea of a 'heritage' type of toy, created with care and love, that would be valued for a lifetime.
I am delighted to be the first port of call on the
blog hop for
My Rag Doll by Corrine Crasbercu.
My Rag Doll was inspired by Corrine's childhood, making dolls' clothes and accessories. Although a rag doll is very much a traditional toy, this book makes a classic idea idea look really contemporary and includes a lovely selection of outfits.
The design of the book is fresh and modern, with clear and attractive photography. The patterns are printed on pages of the book and need to be copied and enlarged by the given percentage.
There are instructions for making dolls with a range of hairstyles and with eleven different outfits. I'd say the book is not aimed at a complete beginner as the instructions are written rather than diagrammatic. However there's nothing complicated if you have a bit of experience. The instructions might also put you off if you are more of a visual learner, however the gorgeous photographs certainly help to meet that need.
The layout of the books includes inspiration drawings and mood boards. I love the red riding hood doll:
My Rag Doll is great inspiration, giving you a number of designs which could be easily customised. Just like the traditional rag doll, these projects are the perfect way to use up treasured fabric scraps. I think there are some really inspired and fun doll outfits that'll make you want to get rooting through your scrap bags to create a gorgeous, personal doll that would be loved by any little girl.
A doll with her own knitting bag - really adorable
I love this doll in a raincoat too
I'm delighted that
