Freyja fairy doll dress pattern and Lily wraparound, reversible doll, dress pattern

(This tutorial first appeared on the Birch Fabrics Blog in January 2014)

When I saw the prints for Birch Fabric’s Ipanema range, I just knew that they would be perfect for creating doll clothes and doll bedding. The bold graphics and colours, will brighten up any play time, especially during the dull, winter days, when play inside, is a necessity!

Supplies

Step one
Cut all pattern pieces from both fabrics and transfer markings. Seam allowances are 1/4″ unless otherwise stated.

Step two
Sew shoulder seams. Sew side seams, making sure to stop and reinforce at the marked points and use a basting stitch between the two marked points.

Step three
Make belt by cutting two, 1″ x 5″ strips from both fabrics. Sew around one long side, one short side and then part of the second long side. Clip seams and turn right side out. Fold under the remaining seam allowance on the second long side. Press and top stitch all three sides. Repeat for second belt strap. Sew velcro to the underside of one strap and the topside of the second strap.

Step four
Pin straps to one of the dresses. Make sure that the corresponding fabrics are facing each other and the raw edges of the belt are aligned with the edge of the dress.

Step five
Place the two dresses right sides together (with straps enclosed). Sew around the outside edge of the dress (DO NOT sew around armholes) with a 1/4″ seam allowance, leaving a gap for turning along the hem of the back of the dress.

Step six
Clip seams, on curves, turn dress right sides out, press and top stitch outer edge of dress.

Step seven
Fold inward 1/4″ at the armholes. Top stitch close to edge. Alternatively finish with bias binding.

Step eight
On the side seam locate the basted area. Stitch a rectangle close to the seam, enclosing the basted stitches.

Step nine
Pull slightly on the seam and remove basted stitches, to create the belt loop.
