I don’t know why I’m surprised to find myself smack in the middle of a new season, a new life, the moment September hits. Maybe it’s the nip in the air or the kiddie footsteps clamoring on and off the school bus. Perhaps it’s some sort of internal clock that’s conditioned me—or, really, all of us—to get back into the swing of things each autumn. Either way, I’m finally motivated to step away from the barbecue and get back into a warm kitchen.
After preserving jam and jelly and pickles all summer long, I gravitate toward the simplest of all fall food gifts: cookies. And between new neighbors, a re-energized book club, potluck dinners and birthday parties, I bake to gift it all away — because if cookies hang out on my kitchen counter, well, they’re gone in about five moments flat. And if the cookies are packed with chocolate chips, well, I cannot be responsible.
Today, I’m sharing my breezy method for gift wrapping a stack of freshly baked cookies. Just mix your favorite recipe together or snap a few chunks of frozen break-and-bake cookies onto a cookie sheet and bake. (I used a favorite maker and woman-owned business, Sweet Loren’s, 100% natural cookies here.) The moment they’ve cooled, wrap them up following the instructions below. Your new neighbor, school teacher, babysitter, work colleague or pet sitter will thank you, promise.
