Tamera Mowry Talks Mommyhood

When I was pregnant – and on bedrest – I used to stay up late with Tia and Tamera Mowry on their E! reality show. Aside from generally being adorable, I loved watching how they delicately balanced their own spunky personalities, their careers, their weddings and now babies. So when the LOVELY Tamera offered to give us an inside peak at her mom-spirations with stunning family shoot from our friend, Jose Villa, well, I jumped! And make sure to carve out time for the equally beautiful film by Joel Serrato.

SMP: As a working mom, do you have any tips for balancing your career and your role at home?

Tamera: Honestly, just try hard take it a moment at a time and try to be very patient and kind to yourself. Some days will be blissful other days will be challenging. And it’s gonna be okay. You will most likely figure it out. In the beginning. I tried to be the perfect mom and wife. I actually was trying so hard to do things perfectly that as a result, I was actually depleting myself. As mothers we must know it’s ok to ask for help and also be ok with everything not being done the way we planned it.

SMP: What advice would you give to a mom who’s feeling guilty about trying to balance it all?

Tamera: It’s ok and normal to feel overwhelmed. Some days you’ll feel you’ve got this. Other days might feel like you are falling apart. Breathe and know it’s normal to feel that way. Do not be afraid to ask for help and take some time to yourself. When we do that, we actually have more patience and more energy to be a better mother. Don’t forget about you. It’s ok to give yourself at least one hour a day to yourself. Whether that’s watching your favorite show, reading a book, or taking a long bath. We mothers work hard. It’s ok to give back to yourself. Your child will thank you with a smile when you come back:) Even your spouse.

SMP: How has your life changed since becoming a mom?

Tamera: Drastically. My priorities have changed. I just want to do everything I can so that my son feels loved. I just want to be the best for my family. I work actually harder. I plan for the future more.

SMP: What have you found to be the most challenging aspect?

Tamera: The sleep deprivation and worrying. My OB said once I became pregnant. “Welcome to excessive worrying. It won’t go away when the baby arrives. You are parent. It is here to stay. “

SMP: The one thing you miss most about life pre-motherhood?

Tamera: SLEEP.

SMP: Now that you have a baby on the hip, what’s the one thing you wish you had done more of a few years ago?

Tamera: I wished I enjoyed the freedom and the time to get up and go anywhere and everywhere I wanted more.

SMP: What are your top mommy-must-haves?

Tamera: A baby swing for when the baby is born. My twin and I’s product called Milky ( if you are nursing), a great rocking chair or glider in the nursery, and a GOOD diaper cream.

SMP: If you were stranded on a dessert island with just your little one, what is the one baby “tool” you’d want with you?

Tamera: His pacifier. That boy loves that thing.

SMP: What’s your go-to MomTail (that’s code for mommy cocktail by the way!)

Tamera: I’m not a liquor person but love my mommy juice. A nice glass of Pinot noir.

SMP: What’s your top fashion pick for new moms?

Tamera: Red lips. It says I’m still fashionable and I can be hot and exhausted at the same time.

SMP: And I have to ask. What’s next for you?! Any amazing things on the horizon that you’re dying to spill the beans about?

Yes, I’m a co host of a new talk show called The Real. It will be airing on Fox stations nationwide this September. I’m so excited. All mommies will love this show.
