On The Plus Side: In Contrast

Leather jacket: Roman’s (similar); Dress: Lucie Lu; Tights: Re/Dress; Boots: (similar); Bag: Vince Camuto (similar)

The word juxtaposition fascinated me long before I actually knew what it meant. I love an all black look where every piece has a contrasting texture – a leather against a knit on top of cotton. Those key details are what makes fashion fun, and when you inadvertently discover that you put together one of these looks it’s almost as if you’ve won the lottery.

I’ve always loved the mix of hard and soft. Spikes and leather paired with a feminine fragrance like Narciso Rodriguez For Her. Tom Ford White Patchouli with a soft, demure look. These contrasts weave a complex story about who you are, how you’re feeling, and what you’re wearing. I collect these stories and even make up some of my own as I ride the subway or pass women in the street. They are endlessly fascinating!

I loved the idea of this flowing polka dot dress from Lucie Lu paired with leather and tough booties against vintage cars and tire stacks. The parrot earrings from Elizabeth Cole were an exciting addition, building the narrative. Do you ever think about the story your outfit is telling?
