Wyman Living History Museum & Whittle the Woods
On our way out of Colorado we stopped by the Wyman Living History Museum. We had asked around for things that locals suggested in the area (one of our favorite things to do when traveling) and everyone agreed we should stop there. It began by one man, Lou Wyman, and his personal collection. It has grown to “an absolutely unique collection from throughout the west and beyond, giving museum guests an experience spanning one hundred years of American life, ingenuity and advancement” (from their website). The kids always do better traveling if we make interesting stops. This turned out to be one of their favorite places we’ve visited so far.
The museum has a big indoor area full of all kinds of treasures.
In our research (asking locals and reading the local paper) we found out that a big woodcarving weekend was happening nearby. “Whittle The Woods” in Craig County made for another interesting stop. The small town event also had a group of girls doing some cheer stunts for fun nearby….a certain daughter of mine was in awe.
The museum and the woodcarving weekend were both free events (donations accepted at the museum). Part of traveling as a large family for us means finding free things to do. Honestly, it is usually the free and local events/attractions that end up being our very favorite. It gives us a chance to meet people, ask about life in their town, ask about history, and learn the beauty of various cultures from the perspective of the people. As much as I hope my kids remember the beauty of the outdoors from this trip, I hope they remember the beauty of the people and the ways every place (even towns within the same state) have cultures unique to them. It is a great big world – from chainsaw carved vikings to magnificent waterfalls – so much to explore, appreciate, and celebrate.
