Draped in Beige

Beige!? now that’s a colour I’d never dream I’d see myself wear again, I thought I’d give this shade just one more chance to redeem itself before I gave up on it altogether; the jury is out my friends… I LOVES it!! Oh yes I do! The combination of the fabrics texture and the cut is a winner in my opinion. This wool blend jersey knit is the most gorgeous feeling fabric I’ve worn and it was the only colour available so I had to ‘Make it Work’

The corset belt I made last year takes the dress to a whole new level, and I’m all for experimenting new levels, the perfect colour to complement the beige don’t you think? The dress I’ve self drafted using a little bit of math especially when it came to the plunging neckline. The right sleeve is intentionally longer than the left due to the placement of the neckline. The right side of the dress has been cut straight where as the left side comes in on an angle from the sleeve down to the hem. Hope that makes sense.

This fabric required reinforcing on all seams to prevent it from doing that wavy wobble business that these light weight jerseys are so prone to, placing cotton tape on all seams certainly solved that problem. The neck line rolled over on itself which hid the raw edge nicely, whether this is a bad thing in sewing land or not I’m not too bothered, it looks neat and tidy to my eye. The sleeve edges I serged in a matching coloured thread and turned over with a straight stitch pressing down with the iron on a piece of white cotton so I didn’t scold the fabric, I did the same with the hem.

The rope ties were made by twisting each individual strip then twisting them around one another tying off at the ends to stop them from unraveling, these were then sewn into the shoulder seam.

I am totally loving on this length and silhouette at the moment, I am a big fan of drape, and proportion, and if it’s an exaggerated proportion? I’m all over that business like a warm flannel. I love how effortless this looks. I’ve documented my pattern and think if I come across similar fabric in the future a similar dress will have to be made.

I could wear this number throughout the day and buckle up for a more dramatic look for the evening. A day to night look right there. It almost has that grecian vibe about it or dare I say a sophisticated monk? Ha!

Oh and of course I had to make a complementary bra, my friend sent a stack of doilies down and one of the larger ones matched the jersey so I pulled out my Elan 645 bra pattern with mods and got to making the bra which has leather straps with snaps at the shoulders. Fancy. A show bra if you will? How many times have you gone out and wished for a bra that looked like it was a part of your entire outfit? This bra has underwires and is lined in a soft black nylon mesh, she is a ‘I don’t mind if my dress falls off my shoulder and reveals half of my breast bra’ You know what I mean? in a tasteful kinda way that is.

I think knickers would be uncomfortable don’t you? unless it’s a lined thong of sorts, I’m not feeling it though so I’ll leave that idea. So, there you go! working beige like a mofo. How about you, what colour would you challenge yourself to sew and wear?

I’m in the mindset that there is so much content on this blog that I think it’s time to start categorising a little better-Pants, skirts, dresses…I need to sort my virtual wardrobe so to speak it’s a little bit untidy.

In other news I’ve bought my Laurel ready to sew that lady into something me appropriate! AND have you noticed the Sew Bossy Initiative badge on my sidebar? The brain child of Heather Lou and Oona? read about it here, the concept is So. Much. Fun AND I’m totally up for the challenge BUT would love to hear from you guys as to who you think I should swap styles with, let me know in the comments so we can hook up and get posting packages and get to sewing something different.

One more thing…just between you and me, my little blog— as I’ve been informed is worthy of a place in Voices of 2013- Australia’s Top 100 blogs within in the category Creative and Home Blogger -there are only 25 blogs within this category- SO my god, he l l o I could seriously be in with a chance of winning a BIG prize, I’m into big prizes and I totally deserve it right? all this hard work it would be nice to be rewarded in a fancy kinda way
