PIZBUINBLOGGERTRIPDAYTWO

Day two of La Reunion will forever stay with me. With paragliding behind us I think I felt more adventurous then before. We began our day with a solid 3 hour drive, I fell asleep in our van close to the beach and awoke in a typical pine forest. I realised the adventure to Piton de la Fournais (her majesty le Volcano) would consist of ascending the island up different levels of flora. Goodbye sand, we slowly made our way through a thick green forest, we began to see fern-like plants, still rich in colour and jungle-like. Moving up we experienced more arid conditions, similar to that of Table Mountain aka fynbos. Soon the plants were scarce and we arrived at Plain des Sables. Nikolas, our tour guide explained it as Mars. Geologically this place resembles a small red planet in our solar system, we were enthralled. Fit for a sci-fi film we began to explore. The barren landscapes are vividly red. Next up Piton de la Fournais, a rather magical site; surrounded by clouds we never saw her tip, so le volcano seemed quiet and calm. Think Mordor- minus the orcs. The terrain changed so often we weren’t sure if we had reached a moist ravine, the Grand Canyon or Jurassic Park. We then passed the English Bridge, and made our way to the “Volcanos playground” a sinister name for the piece of land where the volcano erupts and her lava runs down, humans choose not to build around this area as her last eruption was a mere seven years ago. Each time she erupts the island landmass increases and the lava stays warm for years! We learnt about the 2 types of lava which are produced; rope & granite. The lichen grows over the granite lava and creates an illusion of snow. I enjoyed that, minus the massive downpour of what we discovered was a tropical storm. The journey carried on with the truly magical story of the Lady of Lava church which situated close to the volcano’s playground. During the 70s, the church happened to sit in the way of an eruption, on route the lava split and went around the place of worship; shattering windows while keeping the entire building intact. Mysticism came over me. Day two was magic. The sunset at Lux* Resorts Reunion was crazy, we indulged in an ice-cream or two at the ICI bar and rolled our bodies to bed.
