Chalk It Up To Chairs: Refinishing & Recovering

Disclosure: this tutorial is a sponsored post in partnership with Plaid FolkArt® – All ideas, opinions and bloopers are my own…obviously

The office is the only room in the house besides Scarlette’s that is nearly completely finished. Maybe because they are the two smallest rooms in the house? In any case I only have a few small projects left to do before I declare this room done and I totally knocked out one this past week. I really wanted to paint and recover my desk chair, which is actually one of our dining room chairs. We use a bench on one side of the dining table so no one misses this little chair. And you kind of can’t miss it now because I painted it pink.

I know that the chalk paint style isn’t really a new thing when it comes to giving a piece of furniture a bit of a makeover but this particular product is new to me (well, and to everyone since it just came out) so I thought it would be fun to film a little video while I worked with it.

The folks over at FolkArt® (no pun intended) just released their new line of FolkArt® Home Decor™ Chalk, which is a super pigmented, quick drying paint. I am all about a chalk finish because you don’t have to prep anything. I mean, I think often about how many home decor DIY projects I would like to tackle and then I think about all the prep work like sanding I would need to do and I’m all “AIN’T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT!”

I literally just wiped the dust off the chair and started painting. I went with a vibrant salmon -coral color called…wait for it…Salmon Coral. I know. You would never have guessed. Here is what it looks like:

After you paint you can easily distress your piece because the finish is sand-able. I just made up the word sand-able. You’re welcome, Webster. I chose not to do that, opting instead for just a sleek, shiny finish with the clear home decor wax. I still need to buff mine a bit more in the middle to make it shinier. I have a few bottles of the antique home decor wax too but I was not quite brave enough to try faux distressing anything yet. In time, young padawan. It took less than one 8 fluid ounce bottle to paint my entire chair with three coats. Three coats sounds like a lot but it dries super fast so I literally just went outside and added a new coat once every few hours on a day that we were home all day.

Here is a short video tutorial so that you can see the process and the finish. It’s pretty neat, when you are painting you can definitely see all your brush strokes but there are virtually none once it dries, it leaves a really smooth and even finish. I kind of want to chalk paint everything right now but my husband vetoed pink dining room chairs. I have no idea why. My child makes a cameo because she wanted to help paint the chairs. That is how fool-proof this paint is. I totally let her help paint. I mean, you really can’t screw it up if a three year old can do it.

(Oh and if you like the video, subscribe to my youtube channel because I’m transitioning more of my crafty content like this over there. Next week I’ll have a video up showing how I recovered the chair seat.)

. And I mean, if you wanted to pin my newly awesome chair as your inspiration piece I would not be object to such a thing

You can purchase the FolkArt® Home Decor™ Chalk paint at Jo-Ann fabric and craft stores (where you can also get my favorite apple scented candles. That has nothing to do with this post, I just really love them.)
