my fave hgtv shows

In my house, basically two channels get watched about 90% of the time – HGTV by me and the Golf Channel by my fiance. We’re pretty predictable. Sadly, it has gotten to the point where I’ve seen a lot of my favorite shows’ episodes and I now catch a lot of repeats of things I’ve already seen. That’s how you know you have a problem. I know I’m not alone in my love so wanted to share my fave hgtv shows (and a few things I don’t love) and hear your thoughts.

First up – Property Brothers - This show has been on several years. In every episode the homeowners say “Fixer-uppers? No way dudes!” and the brothers take them to their dream home and then tell them the house is double their budget. Homeowners are like “Whaaaa? Why would you do this to us?” And I’m sitting on the couch yelling at the tv “Have you never seen this show!?!” Then Jonathan says they need a fixer-upper and Drew magically gets them the house they want with apparently no drama that goes into normal home buying. Every couple wants open concept and granite and they are worried about one of Jonathan’s ideas but they begrudgingly go along with it. And voila – they love the house and it looks awesome and I’m depressed.

Anyone else have the exact same Property Brothers experience? Or wonder what they do with the rooms they don’t show us? Do the homeowners get a house with 3 gorgeous spaces and then the rest of the house looks like a wallpaper/60s/gnome house nightmare? These are things I seriously think about.

Love It or List It and Love It or List It Too - I love both versions of this show. I love Hillary and David fighting like an old married couple and I love Jillian’s kinda scratchy voice in the other version. I feel “eh” about Todd, but I still like both shows. I know it’s tv, but the owners get so pissy and it’s amazing. They are always telling off the designer like it is her fault the owners live in a 80 year old house full of mold and with a leaking roof. And/or they’re yelling at the realtor how they need to stay in their neighborhood (of course) and their budget is twelve dollars and they need granite and all the upgrades. I get so annoyed with the homeowners but I have to 1.) see the makeover and 2.) know what they decide.

Rehab Addict - I have a love/hate relationship with Nicole Curtis’s accent but I love seeing what she’s doing. Her style is more shabby chic than I like but I do love old architecture and repurposing old stuff when possible. I’ve been working on getting a little handier with house stuff, so I love seeing a tiny blonde woman kicking ass at home remodeling. (Even though my dad told me my nail gun skills leave something to be desired. Means I just need to practice more!) The hoarder/hates to throw stuff away “just in case” person in me loves to see how Nicole saves some ugly houses and ugly stuff in houses and makes the house beautiful again. I love how she takes historical houses that are set to be demolished and gives them new life.

Yard/House/Bath Crashers - My dream is to be at Home Depot and have one of the hosts from these shows offer to re-do a space in my house. With our jungle yard, right now I’d probably choose Yard Crashers. Come to my house and fix my shiz! One random thing I wonder is how these people are able to always take off like 3 days of work with no notice. “Boss, a stranger is gonna re-do my bathroom and he said I have to help him. See ya in 3 days.” It’s that easy?

House Hunters - I have a dislike/hate relationship with this show. It is alwaaaaays on, so I end up watching it but I would never choose to watch it. You know what I mean. There have been some rumors about the show being “fake” where the people on the show have already actually picked a house so they’re just looking at the other houses for the show. I mainly like seeing episodes with people with big budgets or the international ones since you see some different things. The best part is when you get a monotone person on the show (“Ijustwantsomethingmodernandopenconcept.”) or people who want it all and have no money (“Ugh, no stainless steel?”) or rich people who are buying some awesome house I could never afford in Europe or Asia.

Flip or Flop - I mainly love makeover shows so I like this one. They’re doing flips but usually put some higher end finishes in there so that keeps it interesting. And they often totally gut houses and I looooove seeing a huge transformation. One gripe about this show is that I’ve never seen a “flop.” Every episode I’ve seen, they’ll go way over budget and still make a huge profit.

High/Low Project, Secrets From a Stylist, Design Star and Color Splash - Where did all these shows go? I want all makeover shows all the time. I want to see someone make something super awesome that I could never do and I want to be jealous and annoyed (and sliiiightly motivated). I also miss The Antonio Treatment, Candice Olsen’s shows and Sarah Richardson’s shows. Where did all these people go? I want more design shows and I want them now. HGTV, if you need a guinea pig who owns a 1942 house in Pittsburgh for a new makeover show, call me.

Anyone else as obsessed with HGTV? What are you loving/hating right now? Anyone else sad they don’t show a lot of the older shows too?
