"Don't be upset when things don't go exactly how you want."

After getting engaged to Brent in January 2013, I made a trip to my grandparents' to discuss wedding planning details with them. My grandpa, Jerry, who only voiced his opinion when he believed what he had to say was significant, said to me: "Don't be upset when things don't go exactly how you want." I smiled, but his comment stung. I was on the I'M GETTING MARRIED high, and I didn't want to hear anything negative.

"I have everything in control," I thought, "Nothing could go wrong."
The date was set for July 27th, 2013 and wedding planning commenced. I asked my two grandfathers to walk me down the aisle. Although my Grandpa Jerry was hesitant because of his reserved nature, he agreed.
In April 2013, just months before the big day, my grandpa was diagnosed with lung cancer. They gave him six months to live, but said his life expectancy would be greater with treatment. In May, he passed away due to complications from the chemo.
It was a shock to our family, and we were devastated. The man who was so strong and healthy was no more.
As I reflected on his life and our time together, I thought about the advice he gave me regarding wedding planning. He definitely didn't know he would pass away in the midst of the planning, but his advice couldn't have been more fitting. Losing him was definitely not in my plans for a perfect wedding.
I am a planner by nature. I like to have an agenda and a to-do list for every aspect of my life. When things feel out of my control, I crumble. For the rest of my days, his advice wills stay with me. Not everything will go as I plan, no matter how much I want it to.
