ak vacay part one

It's a little after five o'clock in the morning here in Alaska. I'm the only person awake and it's kind of nice. The bedroom window is propped open, letting in a cool fifty degree breeze. My two sweet girls are snuggled up to me in bed. It's an almost perfect moment.

We've been in Alaska four days now and have done quite a few things already. Sunday we took a long drive to the next town, making several stops along the way to photograph the beautiful scenery. We ended up at a ski resort where we stopped to let the girls play and had the most delicious food. I ordered a teriyaki burger with swiss cheese and grilled pineapple and Dustin's burger had two beef patties, mozzarella cheese, a chicken tender, buffalo sauce, bleu cheese and jalapenos. It looked really good and I was quite disturbed that he ate the whole thing without vomiting.

Monday we had a lazy morning and then spent the afternoon at The Alaska Zoo. They had several different types of bears, including polar bears, of which Alyssa was particularly excited to see. Some of the brown bears were very active; climbing and fighting the whole time we watched. After the zoo we visited Alaska Wild Berry Products. They have a big chocolate fountain in the middle of their store and the girls were mesmerized by it. It had a bin full of chunks of chocolate as big as Emily that they use to keep it running.

Yesterday we took another long drive and ended up at the Matanuska Glacier. The views on the way there were spectacular and once we got to see the actual glacier it was quite beautiful. The glacier is significantly larger than it is in the pictures. The black spaces on either side of the picture are actually just ice covered in dirt. Who knew? You can take a road and go right up to the glacier, but the road is privately owned and they charge $20 per person to see it. Holy outrageousness. Needless to say, we did not get up close and personal. However, we did stop at a reindeer farm on the way back. Alyssa was able to feed some elk and the reindeer so she was thrilled. I got a nice hoof stomp on my ankle, which was pretty great too. (Please note my sarcasm.)
