Need A Fix?

{stitch fix, the new online styling service}

After seeing several ads for Stitch Fix on Facebook, and having friends like the Stitch Fix page, we decided to investigate- and we’re glad we did. We joined the club and have tried the service twice, and now we’re ready to give you the inside scoop.

The idea.

The idea is to have a virtual stylist pick out five items they think you’ll enjoy. In short, you receive a “fix” of 5 clothing pieces designed specifically for you, you can try on each of them on, keep what you want and send back whatever you don’t.

How it works.

You start by creating an account at StitchFix.com, and completing a style profile in which you give your measurements, your style preferences and your budget. Next, you pick a date for your first Fix. Conveniently, you can receive fixes as often or as infrequently as you like- you can either sign up for automatic shipments (fixes could come as often as every month, if you want) or you can log in and request a shipment whenever you’re ready for one.

Your Fix will arrive in a small box with 5 items – either clothing or accessories – inside and a convenient styling guide with ideas on how to use each piece to create a cute and complete outfit. The styling pamphlet is our favorite part.

Now, just try on your five pieces in the convenience of your home and decide what you want to keep and what you want to return.

Make your choices within 5 days and simply seal your returns in the enclosed, pre-paid envelope and drop it in the mail. Then log onto stitchfix.com to review your purchase (which will help them customize future shipments) and pay for what you decided to keep.

The cost.

There’s a $20 styling fee that is charged for each fix. If you keep any of your fix items, though, the fee becomes a credit toward your purchase, in which case you’re only paying for the cost of the clothing you keep. If you don’t like anything in your box, you’re only out $20, as shipping to and from is free.

Why we like it.

Convenience is of the utmost importance to us, and this shipment and return system is a piece of cake. Plus, being able to try on the pieces at your own home and to pair them with your existing wardrobe makes deciding what to keep a cinch.

The price point for each item is far more reasonable than most of the trunk club companies we’ve tried. And, having someone else style you gives you new ideas and pushes you to try new things. After two fixes, we’ve discovered a new and fabulous brand of blouses (more to come on that in a future post)!

The drawbacks.

Despite spending a good amount of time completing a thorough style profile, we have been sent several items that do not fit appropriately or were inconsistent with the style preferences we described. Clearly, this issue is to be expected with any virtual styling effort, but it’s a drawback nonetheless.

On the whole, we enjoyed our Stitch Fixes, and we think it’s a perfect service for the busy professional who wants to add some fun pieces to her wardrobe without spending a ton of time or money doing so.

Have you tried stitch fix yet? What do you think?

Cheers,
The ladies of HOM
