Maya Road Guest Designer: Megan Hoeppner
Hi Roadies! We're excited to welcome Megan Hoeppner as a guest designer today here at Maya Road. Megan has been part of the scrapbooking industry for many years as a designer, teacher, editor and writer. She'll be joining us today and next month as well with some creative inspiration.
My middle name should be Dork. Yes, Megan Dork Hoeppner here today! Excited to share a little layout idea with you. But, first, I must share one of my many dorky moments.
I’ve worked in the scrapbooking industry for over a decade now and have enjoyed many adventures along the way. One such adventure happened last winter, when I joined My Craft Channel as a guest correspondent at the annual Craft & Hobby Association trade show. As part of this fun on-camera gig, I interviewed many crafting personalities, include Maya Road’s own Caroline Lau. She was giving me a tour of the Maya Road booth, showing me the newest delights, including these cute clips:
Insert dork moment now: In response to the clips, I went on and on about how cute the “snow cone” clips were. Ummm... yeah, they’re geo tags. Not snow cones. D’oh! Shows how cool I am, eh?
Inspired by this dork-tastic moment, I decided to create a snow cone layout using these sweet tags.
Do It To It!
Here’s how I created my layout.
1. I watercolored small spots using my watercolor crayons and some watercolor paper.
3. With the clips in place, I poured on some dimensional glaze in the clip’s heart center. I then set the clips aside to dry overnight. I then cut them out, following the outline of the clip for instant clipped snow.
5. Using my watercolor crayons and watercolor paper again, I sketched and blended a snow cone/heart.
Bonus Tip: Did you know gel pen ink blends? I didn’t, but I discovered this cool effect as I created my snow cone. I drew the cone with a silver gel pen I picked up. I then ran my water brush over the penned area, and the ink blended some, softening the lines. Very cool!
6. Using my new (and awesome!) printer, I printed a few photos of a snow cone run with my nieces—one image for each “snow cone” clip I created.
7. I attached the images using thin washi tape and journaled using a cool pen that writes directly on tape.
I hope my idea for altering cute clips—"snow cones” or otherwise—has inspired you. I’d love to hear how you use decorative paper clips in fresh and/or unexpected ways. I’ll definitely be checking this posts for comments and see what’s on your mind.
