Book Review: GONE GIRL by Gillian Flynn

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears.

Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy’s diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

GONE GIRL is a difficult book to review because:

(A) Saying almost anything about the plot would give away spoilers.
(B) It’s already been reviewed a gazillion times.
(C) If you get this multiple choice reference, you’ve already read the book. ;-)
(D) All of the above.

Anyhoo, what can I say, except that I loved it. I flew through this book in a day, because I had tickets to the Gone Girl movie that night. I had to read it first! Overall, it was just a fun, suspenseful, crazy wild ride of a story. I’m reading along, thinking things are one way, and then — bam! I turn the page, and everything has changed. I’ve heard mixed feelings about the ending in particular, but personally, I liked the ending, and thought it was very fitting.

So, that’s all I’m going to say about it, except that I’m so glad I bought the Gillian Flynn box set because I can’t wait to read her first two books. (Also, I enjoyed the movie too. It stayed fairly true to the book, which I was happy about!)
