a beach cottage two diy renovation deck

Morning campers, how the devil are you, I’m here with an icepack strapped to an injured arm from tennis so that’s always a good way to get oneself out of having to paint anything ;)

So this is the before shot of the deck area…when we came to look at the house this was a forgotten almost scrubland area outside the summer room – it had a bbq precariously sitting at the top (trust me though you’d never ever in your right mind want to eat anything from any kinda cooking appliance inside or out in this place anyway so doesn’t really matter if it was precariously balanced or not – let’s just say hygiene of any kind was not exactly first priority here before we got it)…and an old, dirty and very spider web covered washing line attached to the wall to the right and that was about it…to say unappealing is an understatement…looks actually a lot more inviting in the before shots than it did in real life…in reality this area felt unloved and like a nothing place, with worn out grass, uneven surface and a door with didn’t open properly because the ground was not level….

However I thought it was crying out for a little deck – it has the lovely sun here and with a deck would mean a previously un-used part of the garden could be utilised as a nice place to sit in the sun / put a table on it an use as an alfresco dining area…

We got going on this area pretty much right from the word go, I thought it would actually be a really good investment both in time and $$$ to have this up and running quickly and would change the whole way the back of the house is used…

We levelled out all the soil and moved the earth to the other side using it to level the other side of where the deck is too…so it went from a pretty much unusable wasteland area to a level deck and lawn area…

Once we got going on it we needed to make a few unforeseen changes – namely a few pipes that we didn’t want to disturb, so instead of the initial idea we changed it to include a raised seating and bbq area, which actually turned out to be better than the original thoughts on this anyway…

I’m really pleased with how it’s going, we still have quite a bit to do in the finishing and I am unsure as to what colour to stain it after the last debacle I had with staining decks, but overall it’s been one of my better decisions in life – I’m now on the look out for an outdoor table I can beachcottageify, one that is suitable for outdoors and all weathers…

Oh and speaking of tables, I have a lovely and I mean I-am-in-love-with-it-lovely table to show you – my mind is rammed full with bleaching the top of it and painting the legs a heritage creamy grey, because you know what, with an injured bandaged up arm and a whole house to paint, I just need another makeover paint project in my life, gah ;)

Farewell
