10 Amazing Food Experiences in Europe

Europe is home to some of the best, and most diverse cuisine in the world. As a bit of a self-professed lover of food, I was well and truly in paradise on my last jaunt across the continent. I pushed the limits of my palate including trying mussels in Dubrovnik (as a non-seafood lover, that is huge!), and pork knuckle in Prague. However, there are 10 meals I just couldn't resist sharing!

Warning: food porn ahead!

Flemish Stew with Pomme-Frites - Bruges, Belgium

This gorgeous Flemish stew was literally my first taste of Belgium. It came with a side of chips so big we had to put the empty table next to us! The meal was finished off with a glass (or two) of Brugse Zot, the only beer brewed locally in Bruges itself.

Belgian Waffles - Bruges, Belgium

I'm not going to lie, I had waffles almost everyday I was in Belgium, however the waffles from the Tearoom Carpe Diem in Bruges were the best hands down!

Bakewell Pudding - Bakewell, UK

The small village of Bakewell in the Peak District of Derbyshire is known for two things: the Bakewell Pudding and the Bakewell Tart. Don't get these confused! The Bakewell Pudding is the original invention of flaky pastry, jam, topped with egg almond paste, and the tart is simply a variation of it. There are several places claiming to have the original recipe - this one is from The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop.

Halloumi Burger - Cambridge, UK

I visited Cambridge on a day trip from London, and stumbled across Bills restaurant which was recommended to us by a friend. The Halloumi burger was brilliant, and had red capsicum, baby spinach, hummus, and lashing of sweet chilli sauce!

Eton Mess, UK

The traditional English dessert was invented at the prestigious Eton College, and thank god they did! This particular one was made with meringue, mascarpone, fresh cream, and strawberries. I'm not ashamed to say I finished the whole thing!

A Simple Cappuccino - Kortrijk, Belgium

We stopped in the town of Kortrijk on our way to Ieper, desperate for a coffee. We found a little cafe close to the Grote Markt, however the waitress could only speak Dutch and couldn't understand our poor attempts at ordering a coffee in Dutch. Eventually she nodded and disappeared with a smile to bring back three of the most amazing spreads I've seen! There was a bite of caramel cake, coffee topped with whipped cream, finished off with a shot of Advocaat.

Eggplant Parmigiana - Florence, Italy

This parmigiana is honestly the best I've ever had! (Sorry Mum). It was our last night in Florence, and we wondered the streets away from the main tourist areas looking for somewhere to eat. We happened across a little restaurant that was full with locals. The lovely waiter even shouted us a round of aperitifs.

Goulash with Pilsner - Prague, Czech Republic

Food may be cheap in Prague, but that doesn't mean it isn't quality. This simple and delicious meal of goulash and pilsner came to around $8AUD. Amazing!

Pierogi (Polish Dumplings) - Krakow, Poland

A word of warning: pierogi (Polish dumplings) are seriously addictive! Pierogi are dumplings made using dough, stuffed with fillings such as potato, meat, sauerkraut, or fruit, then boiled. We visited a hole-in-the-wall cafe that only had 5 options on the menu, but came highly recommended as the best in Krakow. None of the staff spoke English, but we eventually ended up with an amazingly addictive, and cheap meal!

Bratwurst, Schnitzel, and a litre of bier - Munich, Germany

It's hard to top the ultimate German meal, so in terms of this list I think I've left the best till last. Nothing beats sitting in a beer garden in Munich sharing a table with 10 other locals, getting stuck into a meal of schnitzel, all kinds of wurst, giant pretzels, and of course a couple of litres of bier - all accompanied by Bavarian 'oomp pah' music. Prost!
