WP 3.8 and The New Twenty Fourteen Theme
Discloser: I was not paid to write about CrossFit Tidal Wave but I was paid to update their website.
WordPress has recently made updates and the result is a much sleeker version of 3.8 and they kicked in a new magazine theme Twenty Fourteen. My client CrossFit Tidal Wave in Galveston, Texas has been the benefactor of the most recent changes. As a WordPress user the new version is really nice. The new theme has taken this CrossFit website to new heights.
The theme colors are black, white and green. CrossFit Tidal Wave does not have green in their color scheme which left me re-coding the CSS to match their logo colors. The rule of thumb among bloggers is not to have white text on a black background because it can be hard to read. My work around was to put as little text as possible on the black background. In fact it is only used for the top navigation bar.
All other menu options were placed in the side bar that has the white background. The theme has columns on each side of the main post page. The new post width is half of the size that it was at 474 pixels. It’s a cleaner look but the images also have to follow that width size as well. The featured image is an odd size of 672 * 372 and the only images that really work are horizontal. As you can see here if the image doesn’t fit within the full width it pulls to the left leaving a horizontal patterned background.
Many WordPress users and designers in the forums are trying to figure out how to fix this issue. My personal work around for the time being is to remove the featured image all together.
My preference is to keep the side bars and footer widgets clean. The header is a bit limiting as well with it’s odd size which is great in length and incredibly short in height. Without a header the site title and tag line sit awkwardly in the right of the screen. There isn’t any way to stand out here.
All in all this is a big improvement and the feedback from the company and it’s members has been very positive! Have a look around and let me know what you think.
