  • Learn about the origin of heraldry and what it came to mean in later years.

Heraldry is a system used to represent individuals and families. Heraldry originated so knights could be recognized in battle. It was difficult to tell a friend from a foe behind armor, so identifying coats of arms were pained on each knight's shield and flag. Later, heraldry became a system of identification for members of the upper class.
  • Describe the different elements of a coat of arms.
  • Study various coasts of arms. Identify the different elements and their symbolic meanings.
  • Design a meaningful coat of arms for yourself. Choose colors, symbols and a motto that represents you and your family. Make a blazon, which is a description of your coat of arms and the meanings.
