Aztec

For those of you who are familiar with my style, you would have noticed that I’ll mostly be seen in neutral palettes and monochrome colours however, since the weather has well and truly been heating up, I’ve been in the mood to switch things up! During the summer, I’ve mostly been inspired by Aztec and tribal prints and have been really taking notice of pieces with a splash of that Aztec inspired print.

Aztec and tribal prints have been at the very heart of cultural diversity over the millennium. The style originated in Latin America, India, and Africa and I think, has never really gone out of style. Today, you’ll see ethnic prints on the runway, reflecting climatic and societal rituals from all continents. Beautiful Matabele designs from South Africa are colourful and known for their exciting geometric designs while Guatemalan textiles, from South America, are also bright and cheery, perfectly suited for backpacks and purses.

Here are some tips on incorporating Aztec/tribal inspired prints into your wardrobe:

First off, don’t overdo it – it’s all about the perfect balance. Practice moderation by allowing one piece to stand alone. While prints can be successfully mixed and matched, don’t go overboard. Pairing patterns with solids will usually tend to make the pattern really stand out.

Look at magazines and blogs and draw inspiration of what works (and what doesn’t!).

Pair prints with boots or sandals, and don’t be afraid to mix textures.

Go wild with accessories. Belts, scarves, charms and enameled bib-necklaces add polish to the look.

Before you go away and pack away all your seasonal clothes, you might want to try matching some summer and winter styles during the trans-seasonal period – for example, textured sweaters paired with tribal-print shorts are perfect for those spring/autumn days when it’s not too hot or not too cold!
