Crochet Basics : Granny Square Tutorial

I thought it would be good fun to share my take on a granny square, to be honest most patterns are near enough the same and to the naked eye you probably wouldn’t notice a chain 1 here and chain 2 here but as with most crafts you soon take your own spin on things, so here is my quick easy tutorial for you.

You need:
Crochet hook size 4mm
Wool
Scissors
Tapestry needle

*Please note I am using UK terms throughout*

Using your hook make a slip knot on your hook and ch 4, slip stitch into the first chain (furthest away from hook) to form a ring. We are now going to be working into the ring.

Round 1
Ch-3 (counts as the first tr) 2tr, ch-3, *3tr, ch-3* repeat from * to * twice, sl st into the top of the ch-3 (made at the start).

The centre is made up of 4 groups of 3 trebles with 4 chain 3 spaces as corners, now fasten off and change colour. This is optional, for beginners you may wish to carry on with the same colour.

Round 2
You can either continue with the same colour wool if so just sl st into the next space OR attach new colour in any of the chain 3 corner spaces with a sl st, ch3 (counts as first tr) 2tr, ch3, 3tr, *ch-1, into the next corner space work 3tr, ch3, 3tr * repeat from * to * twice, ch-1, sl st into the top of the ch3 from the start. Fasten off second colour or continue with same colour.

Round 3
If using different colours attach 3rd colour to any ch-3 corner space, into the corner ch-3 (counts as first tr) 2tr, ch-3, 3tr, * ch-1, 3tr, into ch-1 space from previous round, ch-1, into next corner space work 3tr, ch-3, 3tr * repeat * to * twice. Ch-1, 3tr, into ch-1 space, ch-1 and then sl st into the top of the ch-3. Fasten Off.

Round 4
Either continue with same colour and remember to sl st into next chain space or attach final colour in any ch-3 corner space and ch-3 ( counts as first treble). Into corner work 2tr, ch-3, 3tr, ch-1, 3tr, ch-1, 3tr, ch-1, then work corner (3tr,ch-3, 3tr) ch-1, 3tr, ch-1, 3tr, ch-1. Work next corner space as before, then ch-1, 3tr, ch-1, 3tr, ch-1. Work next corner space as previous, ch-1, 3tr, ch-1, 3tr, ch-1 then sl st into the top pf the ch-3 from start.

All future rounds are worked the same way as round 4, each corner is made up of 3tr, ch3, 3tr. With a ch-1 in between and then 3tr worked into the ch-1 spaces of the previous round.

Well Done, you have now completed your first Granny Square!

*You could continue working rounds and make a blanket or you could stop after the 4th round and fasten off and make multiple squares for a cushion, or make a scarf or you could make 6 squares and use them as coasters. It’s up to you as to what you want to use them for and therefore you should remember to pick your wool appropriately to the project you are carrying out.*

Here’s an overview of a granny square. Hopefully yours should resemble something similar…
