Budget-Friendly Date Nights: Date Your Spouse on a Dime

I can count the number of dates my husband and I have been on since becoming parents. In the first year of our first son’s life we went on three. Three dates in a whole year! Yeah, I know. That’s not good. But it’s tough to find the time, the money, and a sitter. But it is still so important to date your spouse and to spend time with them away from your kids. I have since made more of an effort to plan for dates and so has my husband. But, it is still important to stay within a budget and not let your need for couple time to derail your bank account and savings goals. I wanted to share with you a few ideas on how to enjoy grown up couple time on a dime.
1. Look for BOGO deals. Check out great coupon sites like LivingSocial or Groupon. Or if your city has an Enjoy the City book checkout the bargains they have. We have gotten Buy One Get One movie tickets, bowling and restaurant deals.
2. Take a Hike. Rural or urban your area probably has a trail circuit or park system that has walking or hiking trails. Pack a picnic and go for a walk.
3. Pick your own. We live in a pretty rural area that has lots of pick-your-own farms that include everything from strawberries to pecans. So pretty much year-round there is an opportunity to pick fruits, nuts and vegetables for later use.
4. Enjoy the arts. See if your local college or university has an arts program. These schools usually have free student art exhibits open to the public and often refreshments are served. Or Google “free museum day” and see what your city offers.
5. Check it out. I love to think of the library as a free bookstore, because really it is. Head the library and load up on books, DVDs and music. Then go home and make a pizza or pop some popcorn and enjoy a poetry night or movie night.
6. Binge-watch in style. If you cannot go out make a Netflix movie marathon night. Pick a theme and make a meal around that theme and find a movie or two to enjoy. For example: You could cook drive-in movie food like a hotdog and funnel cake and watch Grease.

It takes a little creativity, but you can have a really great and romantic date night with your husband without spending much or even any money.
