DIY: Pom Pom Flip Flops

My DIY contributor Laura is back today with the cutest summer project. And if your anything like me and live in flip flops in the summer, you will love the flair she adds to plain ol’ flip flops.

Yep, pretty much putting pom pom’s on anything and everything I can get my hands on! So when I looked down at my sad black flip flops, I knew they would be the perfect place to pom bomb! An amazing thing about this DIY is that you don’t need much!
What You Need:
1. A pair (or two) of flip flops {I had to make some for my daughter too!}
2. Scissors
3. Pompom makers {Yep, that’s right, the circular little gadgets will turn your world upside down! You can buy them in a variety of sizes at almost any craft store!}
4. Any yarn! {I’m loving this stripped cotton baby I got at Michaels. I spilt coffee on it and it came right out with a little water! Another bonus is that it’s super soft and not at all itchy!}
Let’s get started!
Well make the poms first because you are going to be too excited once you get the knotting on the flip flops done! {I made 6 poms, 4 four for our flops and two for my daughter’s hair – just sayin…}
Open both sides of your pom pom maker. Start wrapping yarn around one side. {Tip: Don’t worry about it being too tiddy I usually do three layers on the smaller makers, 6-7 on the larger makers.}
When your done wrapping the first side, cut off your excess yarn. Repeat on the other side! Then cut off your excess yarn again. Take your wrapped maker and trim up the center!
Cut off a 6″ piece of your yarn. Wrap it around the center portion of the maker, pull snug, and tie a knot. {Tip: If you are using a wool yarn be careful not to pull too tightly, you will tear the yarn!} Then, wait for it, the best part: pull your maker apart! {Tip: You might have to give your pom baby a trim!}
Now for the flip flops! Cut a piece of yarn about 1.5 yards (or arms lengths) for kids shoes and 3 yards (or arms length) for adult sized flops. Tie a simple knot onto the end of one flop. Then, make a bunny ear with your yarn and pull the end of your yarn though. {Tip: this is also called a slip knot!} Repeat the process all the way around your flops! Once you are done, you tie a knot at the other end and trim the excess. {Tip: You can add a dab of hot glue to the inner part of the shoe to hold the yarn on but it’s not totally necessary!}
Once you have your flop wrapped tie your pom onto the center with a simple knot! Custom, inexpensive, done YOURSELF, flip flops!
