Family Trip to Marietta Square, Georgia

Recently we took a family trip to Marietta Square, Georgia. It’s about 20 miles from downtown Atlanta. You can spend a few hours to a full day here, sight-seeing, shopping and eating. The center of the square is Glover Park, where you can people watch and let the kids run off some steam.

The park is home to a lovely fountain which makes the perfect photo op. There’s an exact replica of the Liberty Bell and a statue of former Senator Alexander Stephens Clay. Of course, there are flowers, grassy areas, and lots shade trees. We sat for a while, took some photos and watched my young cousins play on the train playground. It got us off to a relaxing start to explore the rest of Marietta Square.

Surrounding Glover Park, are small businesses such as Antiques on the Square, Doodlebugz – a gift shop, The Corner Shop– British groceries and gifts and much more. You could spend hours browsing and buying. Each store has unique items which made for nice family gifts. I just had to get something for my grandson!

There are lots of places to eat too. From “authentic farm to table” like The Butcher The Baker, light fare from The Vineyard and a mixture of Latin and Asian at Taqueria Tsunami (a popular spot for tourists and locals). We had lunch at the Australian Bakery Café and enjoyed real meat pies for the first time. At the end of our day, we stopped off for a snack at Sarah Jean’s Ice Cream. I highly recommend it.

For history buffs, there’s a lot to offer. The Gone With the Wind Museum and the Strand Theater are just two activities. Take a tour on the Marietta Trolley to get the 411 on the history of the area or choose the ghost tour.

Marietta Square is a great day trip for families. We plan on going back next time we’re in Atlanta. Have you been there?
