4 Ways to Travel on the Cheap This Winter

During the winter months, the dark and cold can really affect your mood. A short vacation may be just the thing you need in order to feel rejuvenated and refreshed. But how will you be able to afford it?

Since it’s off-season for many popular summer destinations, flights and other forms of transportation tend to be cheaper. To take full advantage, read our four money-saving tips.

1. Pick a practical destination

Pick your vacation destination wisely. To get the best deals, you’re going to have to do a bit or research, but with sites like HipMunk and Kayak, you’ll find an affordable destination in no time.

You may not be able to go somewhere warm, but the change of scenery will do you good regardless. Once you find a location that currently has affordable travel options, do some more reasearch. You’re going to want to find out what the location is like during the winter.

2. Don’t stay in hotels

Hotels are extremely expensive. Instead, search for deals on sites like Groupon and Cheap Carribean. You could also stay in an AirBnB — one of the best startups around. AirBnB will save you a ton of money when it comes to travel. I’ve stayed in AirBnB’s around the world and each stay has been positive and memorable (including Amsterdam, San Francisco, and NYC).

Still too expensive? If you have a friend or family member that lives in a cool place, ask if you can stay with them for a few days.

3. Pack Lightly

Unfortunately, many airlines charge you to check your luggage. To save some money, just take a carry-on. This may require some packing skills, but you’ll get the hang of it. Just ask yourself a few questions: Does your accommodation have a blow-drier? Do you really need to bring two pairs of jeans? Are you actually going to wear that dress? Are four bathing suits really necessary for three days?

4. Make packed lunches

Don’t go out for every meal! Instead, stop at the grocery store the second you arrive to get snacks and things to make sandwiches. This works especially well if you’re staying at an AirBnB, but it’s doable at a hotel as well.
