On Our Radar: The Adam Levine Collection from Kmart
Women have a wide selection of retailers to choose from when it comes to shopping on a budget — men unfortunately don’t. I recently wrote an article about the best (and cheapest) places to shop in Soho, NYC and only one (ONE!) of the stores carried men’s clothing — and the section was itty bitty compared to the women’s section. The same scenario exists all across the United States; definitely not fair.
We can easily go to a store and find a stunning LBD for under $30, or well-fitting denim for under $25, while men have no other choice than to drop the big bucks for must-have trendy items. Until recently…
If you haven’t heard, Kmart teamed up with Adam Levine to create an on-trend collection based on his style; and a few weeks ago, team Broke & Chic had the opportunity to discuss the new line over breakfast with Kevin Christiana — the head designer.
After graduating from FIT, Kevin jetted off to Italy for seven months and apprenticed under a tailor in Sicily. Upon returning, he started his own denim line — K Jeans.
You might recognize Kevin from season four of Project Runway. After the season was over, he has consistently stayed passionate about denim and has worked with notable brands including Tommy Hilfiger.
So what’s trending for men?
Chambray shirts, leather jackets, chinos, and selvedge denim are just a few of the items many stylish men are currently sporting, but lets get real — how can you find on-trend selvedge denim and leather anything on the cheap?
Another thing about selvedge denim is it has become a status-symbol — especially for men. The Adam Levine Collection gives you the chance to wear a pair of denim that looks just like the pairs that could easily drain $200 from your bank account.
According to Kevin:
It’s about picking one inexpensive component, and then taking advantage of something else that will make it look more expensive. In the case of jeans, we picked a less expensive denim, but we used a more expensive dry and wet process, so we were able to give the correct look at a very affordable price point.

Look One
Color is great, but there’s nothing more suave than gray, navy, and black. Below Jerry is wearing a pair of denim in the Dean fit, and a grey button-down with the selvedge detail.
Look Two
This look is my personal favorite. The well-fitting black denim (also in the Dean fit), the grey button-up from above layered with a camo sweatshirt, and a jacket made with vegan leather gives Jerry a relaxed but cool look. Perfect for our current weather situation — technically spring, but not really.

Look Three
This outfit is extremely simple: well-fitted denim with a simple button-down shirt. Dress it down by wearing sneakers and a hat, or dress it up by adding a pair of oxfords.
