Microadventurer Valentine’s Day Gift Guide (and My Wish List)

Valentine’s Day can be more than expensive dinners and heart-shaped boxes of candy. I like to think of Valentine’s Day as a time to reinforce those resolutions/goals made at the beginning of the year.

If one of your partner wants to run a half marathon this year, why not look into a membership to a local spa so she can include massages as part of her training recovery? If you are looking to treat yourself this year, how about focusing on that goal of going through yoga teacher training by investing in an inversion workshop to expand your practice?

If you are looking for a gift for the microadventurer in your life or just want to celebrate how awesome you are with some self-love this year, I have a gift guide for you.

This gift guide includes items I have tried and love. I would not hesitate to buy these for a friend or family member.

Microadventurer Gift Guide

  • Riptide Speaker – I was hesitant about this speaker at first but I’ve been using it for a month and am obsessed with this tiny outdoor waterproof speaker by Nuu. It’s submersible, sand proof, and it floats! I decided to see how it would hold up in the shower and found out the hard way that it not only has great connectivity through closed doors but it also allows you to answer phone calls. Yes, you guessed it, I ended up answering the phone by accident and having a conversation while I was in the shower. Talk about awkward! I’m planning on taking this little speaker paddleboarding with me once I’m able to get back on a board. Mine looks just like the one in the image above but it also comes in blue.
  • How to Travel the World on $50 a Day: Revised: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Smarter – I shared about this book on Instagram in early January and now that it is available for purchase, I thought it would be a good gift for the aspiring globetrotter in your life. This is the updated and expanded version from Matt of the Nomadic Matt blog…I wish I had it before our trip to Vancouver in November.
  • Whitney Laptop BagThis is my go-to bag when I know I’m going to be out of the house for a very long day and I sometimes use it as my carryon personal item when traveling. It’s a great shoulder bag that turns into a backpack and it has so many organization spaces that I don’t feel like my crap is just rolling around all willy-nilly. It comes with a quilted cosmetics bag and shopping bag, which I usually use to wrap up my sweaty gym clothes (gross!). This is a vegan bag so if you know somebody in the market for vegan accessories, this is an excellent option.
  • Learning to Fly: A Memoir of Hanging On and Letting Go – The perfect Galentine’s Day gift for somebody who isn’t looking for love stories and romance on February 14th. This is for the friend who needs a reminder that a break up can lead to amazing things. Steph Davis went through a divorce and huge blow to career at the same time and instead of hiding and hoping things would get better, she headed out to Colorado with her dog to learn how to skydive. She ends up more about herself and how to open herself back up to the idea of love.
  • Teton Sports Trail Runner Hydration Pack – I love this tiny pack for quick hikes. There is plenty of room for the water reservoir plus my keys, phone, and a snack or two. I like that I can adjust the pack to fit snugly against my body and just wearing it makes me consider taking up trail running this spring. Use KamAltar for 5% off your purchase and a portion of the sale will support The Sierra Club as part of Teton Sports’ Giveback Endeavor when you shop through the Teton Sports online store.
  • Leave It Better Than You Found It Shirt – Alex has the topo version of this shirt, but I think the green version makes a bigger statement. I have the tank top version of this design from Parks Project. I love everything in the Parks Project shop, to be honest, but if I was to pick out one shirt for the explorer in my life, it would be this shirt.

What about me?

Alex and I don’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day, but if he happens to be reading this post right now…well, you get the point. This list includes a few fun things that I haven’t tried yet (with the exception of the compression socks. We both of a pair but you can never have too many pairs!) and I would’ve included these in a regular gift guide but I wanted to separate the not-tested items from the ones I currently own.

My Microadventure Wish List:

  • Pat’s Backcountry Beverages Beer Supplies – Who would say no to having a beer at the top of a mountain or after a long day of hiking along dusty trails? Pat’s Backcountry has a way to have a brew without the weight and I’m totally intrigued by this!
  • Black Slate Slim – While I go to the climbing gym 3 to 4 nights a week there are times I would like to have a quick workout while at home. I know I would benefit from incorporating a hangboard workout into my routine and the versatility of having a blank slate hangboard board that installs like a doorway pull up bar is right up my alley. I could put my own holds on the board or by a piece like the grey one shown above that includes a variety of finger holds and options.
  • Born to Explore ShirtThis shirt from Mile High Clothing is so simple and classic looking to me. I saw it on Instagram a few weeks ago and I took a screencap to make sure I remember it. If you couldn’t guess by the name of the brand, this company is based in Denver, Colorado.
  • GoTenna – These are still in the pre-order stage and I really considered pre-ordering over the holidays before the price went up but I just didn’t get around to it. These devices allow you to send messages even when you don’t have cell service or wifi connection. You can share your location when you’re off the grid…something that is obviously a concern for those times we’re in the mountains or the desert.
  • Rumpl blanket – I just started seeing this brand pop up before the Winter Outdoor Retailer show and started messaging my friends who would be in Salt Lake to go to the booth and check them out. The designs are gorgeous (the one above is based on The Wave in Arizona) and the blankets are built to keep up with active lifestyles. Gorgeous and useful!
  • Microadventures: Local Discoveries for Great Escapes – This will be out a few days after Valentine’s Day, but at least you can get it ordered now. Alastair is behind the Microadventure movement and he’s coming out with ta book that’ll inspire readers to find great escapes in their backyards. I cannot wait for this to be available.
  • Compression Socks – Because a gal can’t have too many pairs of cute compression socks! I have one pair (and Alex has two) of the nylon compression socks from Vim&Vigr and I would gladly accept socks as a Valentine’s Day gift if it’s a pair of these ones.

And that’s it! I hope this post inspires you to break away from the typical stuffed animal gift and give the gift that supports your partner’s active lifestyle. You deserve to treat yo’ self this month…you don’t have to wait around for somebody to buy nice things for you. You work hard for your money and you can take care of yourself :)
