Mini Expo: Photographer Emma Peijnenburg
In today’s Mini Expo the spotlight is on Emma, a talented young photographer who just started her photography internship at CHAPTER FRIDAY.
Hi Emma! What’s your name, age and city?
Hi there! My name (surprise, surprise!) is Emma Peijnenburg. I’m 19 years old and currently living in Amsterdam. I just moved here, but already fell in love.
How would you describe your photography style?
I’m still experimenting, but I would say: personal, fresh, happy and always with a wink. I don’t know if I have a specific style yet. When I photograph outside the result is very different to the pictures I take inside. Locations are very important to me. I get inspired by my environment easily and I love it when a certain setting influences my train of thought.
How did you get your start in photography?
I’m addicted to magazines and obsessed with websites like Pinterest and Tumblr. Seriously, how many wonderful pictures are there on this planet? I’ve always been a collector of all things pretty. While studying graphic design in high school, I realised immediately I had to do something with people, expressions and emotions, and not only work with computers all day. The moment my inspiration books were about to explode, I decided to start photographing myself. The rest is history!
What’s an accomplishment you’re proud of so far?
It was hard finding my way at school. The way the classes were set up didn’t really work for me, so I only started to blossom when I left. A year ago I started organizing shoots and initiating collaborations and that’s when my career took off. I learned the importance of showing initiative and that you can do so many fun things if you just put your mind to it. Also, meeting my business partner in crime Cate gave me a huge creative boost.
Biggest dream for the future?
Being asked to shoot projects I love and actually getting paid for it. And to have total creative freedom to make the prettiest picture possible: from choosing my favourite model, an awesome location and editing the picture how I see it fit. I would also love to work abroad and discover new cities like Copenhagen or Paris!
