Easily PerSUEDEd

Between overalls, Birkenstocks, plaid and so many other trends, the 90s have been back in full swing these last couple of years. But according the Spring 2015 collections shown in September, a new decade has resurfaced. Fringe, flares, and earth tones are just some of the things we’ve seen as of late (and who knows what the Fall ’15 collections will bring next week?) And those all have one thing in common…and that’s a nod to 70s style. There’s one part of this decade, though, that is making its way back in a big way, and I might even be perSUEDEd to get on board with this one…

You know I love puns and I’m sure you’ve guessed by now it’s SUEDE. Like tall boots, I’ve had a love / hate relationship with this in the past. I’ve never owned much suede because I’m one of those people who cares way too much about ruining my things due to the weather (and when there’s at least a couple feet of snow on the ground right now, you can imagine a floor length suede coat wouldn’t be in my wardrobe rolodex). But when done right, it’s a material that can really elevate a look. Just be careful because the cheap stuff (or at least when the quality looks poor, regardless of whether or not it actually is) can do the complete opposite.

Finding suede bags and shoes is easy. That’s something that’s never in or out, more or less just seasonal (although fashion folks love suede in summer — not necessarily the most practical…although the abundance of blush suede makes it a little less out of place). But what about a suede dress? A t-shirt? Skirt? Pants? Yes, it’s all there just waiting for you to come get it. The question is…would you wear all that suede?

Not saying you have to wear head-to-toe suede, of course…you can just try one piece, a la Gucci Spring ’15 (pictured above). Personally, I’m not a fan of the traditional tan suede as I’m not really a tan person (although I can get pretty dark with the right amount of sun…and I recently became on board with camel coats). It looks great on a lot of people (Olivia Palermo doesn’t count because she can literally wear anything) but it’s just not for me.

I prefer black or colored suede, as it just fits my personal style. However, if you want to go along with the 70s thing that’s happening right now, tan or rust-colored suede is the way to go. A little Saint Laurent for some inspiration…

And a great way to style suede to give it some edge (as opposed to the typical boho vibe).

You can also opt for a fringe jacket…and they’re everywhere right now, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding the perfect one that fits your style, your body and most importantly, your budget.

My favorite option, as it’s the most unique, would be colored suede, which Derek Lam did oh-so-well for his Spring ’15 collection. It’s out there, definitely not traditional, but that’s exactly why I like it.
