Fashion Week Beauty

During fashion month, we talk about three things — 1. the collections (because isn’t that what’s it’s all about?) 2. street style (what happens outside the shows has now become just as important as what happens on the runway, whether we like it or not) and 3. celebrity sightings…but mostly just Kim K’s new platinum hair (Jared too!) The beauty scene doesn’t get as much attention, so today I thought we’d change all that.

Honestly, I rarely pay attention to the beauty looks at fashion week either. But for some reason this season I’ve really started to take notice. Whether it’s something as crazy as the gold leaf faces of Rick Owens or simple as Chloe’s barely-there makeup, there were some really notable beauty looks this season. So let’s get inspired for our daily beauty routine, a special night out, or perhaps even Halloween. Shall we?

I guess we have to start with Rick Owens because I can’t leave you hanging with “gold leaf faces” without some explanation. It really needs no written explanation, though. You just have to see this awesomeness for yourself. Would I recommend this for an everyday look? If 24k gold, then maybe (perhaps we’ll find that this eliminates wrinkles / acne / uneven skin tone / any other skin flaw we hate…FOREVER) but if not, this is best reserved for editorial, or like I said, HALLOWEEN.

One of my favorite beauty looks so far this season was at Rodarte — super simple makeup with rhinestones as eyeliner. Wouldn’t be surprised to see this as a music festival beauty trend, especially at Coachella (and it would be quite the upgrade!)

The most…interesting…look I’ve seen so far was at Givenchy yesterday. In the words of Pat McGrath, Riccardo went for a “Chola Victorian” face for Fall ’15. Although there’s not much going on in the makeup department (if the models are even wearing any at all), there is still a SHIT TON happening here. I understand anything for fashion but with the perfectly placed and swirled, greased down hair and all of those accessories on just one face, this wasn’t my favorite. But definitely one of the most memorable.

The fashion houses who also have a huge beauty presence (think: Chanel, YSL and of course Dior, pictured above) typically show somewhat relatable beauty looks on the runway. Dior tends to push it a little more, but it’s not like this eye makeup is completely unachievable. Although considering I can barely put on bottom eyeliner, I’m not the one to give you a beauty tutorial on this one.

The lips at Dolce & Gabbana were just PERFECTION. It’s that ideal berry red stain that’s neither too glossy nor too matte. Although according to what was actually used for the Fall ’15 show, it’s more on the matte side (as it’s from Dolce’s new matte lipstick collection).

If red lips are your thing, would you ever try going darker? Even black (a la Giles?) It quite a risk, but if done right…one that could totally pay off.

Some designers went in a more unconventional, yet not totally out there, eye makeup direction…like Anthony Vaccarello, for example.

A little more out there, but I’m for some reason sort of into this messy Fendi look that basically just gives you that “I forgot to take off my eye makeup last night” vibe.

The eye makeup at Rochas was pretty spectacular. Like most of these looks, not for everyday, but still…I’m not opposed to this.

In the same category as Rodarte, Ohne Titel thought outside the box for eyeliner and used these caviar microbeads (the same ones that were popular in nail polish a few years back). Apparently they were applied with Elmer’s glue, which I’m not sure if I’d recommend doing yourself…but if you like to experiment with makeup and consider yourself an expert in the DIY department, then I say go for it!

If you’re looking for something you can actually wear in your everyday life, leave it to Tom Ford to create the perfect evening makeup. This is ideal if you’re not into bold lipstick and want it to be more about the eyes. Tom Ford makeup is pretty fantastic so it’s no surprise to see this type of look accompanying his new collection. It’s just the right amount of everything — mascara, eyeshadow, eyeliner, blush, lipstick. If you’re not going for a no-makeup-makeup-look but don’t want to look like a clown, this is where it’s at.

But if you WANT the no-makeup-makeup look, your inspiration should go no further than Chloe. This one’s probably my favorite for real life as it requires minimal effort (which I’m all about when it comes to makeup). This is one of those where skincare would be super important as you’re really letting your “true colors” shine through. But other than that, going with a light peach blush, the same hue in a lip stain (or even just a balm) and just brushing up those brows is really all you need to do here.

Do you have any favorite looks from fashion month so far? Featured here or not? Any you might actually try yourself? If so, here’s a few things that might help you with that…
