PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS / About my Camera, Lens and other blogger necessaries

It’s one of the most asked blogging questions during events, fashion weeks and online, “what Camera and lens do you use?” My Camera and Lens are one of the most important tools for my blog alongside my macbook, an internet connection, my Iphone (and mophie!) and editing programs. (The other day I had a bit of a Camera scare which luckily ended up being a broken lens instead of broken camera) So while I’m waiting for mr. mailman to deliver me my new camera lens I will give you a little round up of my “gear”

CAMERA

I use the Canon 5D mark II, a camera replaced by the very expensive newer version; the 5D mark III. I think a good dslr camera is an important investment for your blog and if you know how to use it and if the photography is an important aspect of your blog it’s well worth the splurge. However… don’t forget that it’s very likely that other people might have to use it (you know… the friends and family who take your outfit photos or event pics) and won’t feel at home with the camera as much as you do. I’m not sure if I would go for the mark III if I would have to buy a new camera, I think I would look for a cheaper mark II on Ebay, the Canon 6D, Canon 7D or one of the Nikon camera’s.

LENS

I use the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM lens. I think the 50mm is the most popular lens for fashion and street style bloggers and photographers. The low f-stop and 50mm make for an perfect shallow depth of field (background blur / soft out of focus background) I highly recommend this lens! (A cheaper version is the 50mm f1.8 lens) I now realize I can write whole blogposts about how to use this lens and maybe in the future I should For now look into these two posts explaining the “depth of field”;

EDITING

I use the standard camera raw program that came with my camera (camera raw 6.0) and Photoshop CS5 to edit my photos. I photograph in raw format and adjust the brightness, exposure, contrast and temperature in “camera raw” I don’t use Photoshop often, mostly to crop and resize photos and sometimes I use the “smudge tool” smudging them dark circles away I edit everything on my Macbook pro.

INSTAGRAM

I can hardly call my old Iphone 4S a tool :S I should look into another phone but for now it does its social media Instagramy job, I edit my Instagram photos using Afterlight and VSCOcam.

MOPHIE

Now this is a must have blogger tool, a mobile charger, the answer to empty Iphone batteries. Seriously, I love my Mophie!

INSTAX MINI 8

Not really a blogger necessary but totally fun. I do love my Instax for traveling but the film is expensive. I still tend to drag it along with me wherever I go
